The Marshall Thundering Herd and the Ohio Bobcats meet in college basketball action from the Ohio Convocation Center on Saturday afternoon.
The Marshall Thundering Herd will look for a solid road win to add to their 5-1 start to the year after an 84-64 win over William & Mary in their last outing. Jon Elmore led the Herd with 26 points on 7 of 16 shooting with 4 threes, 5 rebounds and a team-high 5 assists. C.J. Burks came 2nd with 16 points along with 6 rebounds and 3 steals while Rondale Watson added 12 points and a team-high 7 rebounds. Jarrod West added 11 points to round out the scoring in double figures for Marshall in the winning effort. Elmore leads Marshall with an average of 20.7 points and 5.3 assists per game while Watson leads the Herd on the glass with 5.7 rebounds per game this season. As a team, Marshall is averaging 87.5 points per game on 46.4% shooting from the field, 34.6% from behind the arc and 67% from the foul line this season.
The Ohio Bobcats will look to build on back-to-back wins following an 89-65 win over Iona in their last outing. Jason Carter led the Bobcats with 20 points while Teyvion Kirk and Ben Vander Plas each had 18 points with Kirk adding 7 rebounds and a team-high 5 assists while Vander Plas had a share of the team-high with 11 rebounds for the double-double. Gavin Block added 13 points with 3 threes and 5 assists of his own while Doug Taylor added 12 points with 11 rebounds for the double-double to round out the scoring in double figures for Ohio in the winning effort. Carter leads the Bobcats in scoring with 18.7 points per game while Taylor leads the Bobcats on the glass with 8.5 rebounds per game and Kirk leads Ohio in assists with 3.2 assists per game this season. As a team, Ohio is averaging 75.7 points per game on 42.8% shooting from the field, 23% from behind the arc and 67.7% from the foul line this season.
Marshall is 9-3 ATS in their last 12 games overall and 7-3 ATS in their last 10 road games while the over is 4-1 in their last 5 games against a team with a winning record. Ohio is 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games overall and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 non-conference games while the under is 5-0 in their last 5 games following a win. Marshall is 1-5 ATS in the last 6 meetings between these two teams.
It’s a little bit surprising to see Marshall as a road favorite here, but I think that just goes to speak of how poor Ohio has been ATS this season. Marshall hasn’t had a lot of success ATS in this matchup, but the Herd have the more explosive offense and have been much more consistent ATS dating back to last season, so I’ll lay the points with Marshall here.
