Western Kentucky dominated Charlotte on both ends of the court and had no trouble pulling away after an 11-0 Hilltoppers run gave Western Kentucky a 51-29 lead with 13:59 left in regulation. Western Kentucky shot 50.0% from the field while holding the 49ers to just 35.4% shooting from the field & 30.8% from beyond the arc. Defensively, Western Kentucky is allowing their opponents to average 72.1 ppg on 44.1% shooting from the field. The Hilltoppers have a rebound margin of 2.6 and a turnover margin of -1.6.
The Old Dominion Monarchs had their 8-game winning streak snapped and dropped to 10-4 (0-1 C-USA) on the season after being defeated by the Marshall Thundering Herd, 70-67, this past Thursday. Old Dominion had a hard time slowing down the fast paced Marshall offense throughout the game and couldn’t get a key defensive stop late as Marshall’s Jarrod West was able to hit a game-winning three-pointer with just :02 seconds left in regulation. Old Dominion shot 44.8% from the field, however, allowed Marshall to shoot 52.7% from the field & 36.0% from beyond the arc in the loss. Leading the way for the Monarchs was B.J Stith who had 27 points, 4 rebounds, and a steal.
On the season, Old Dominion is averaging 66.4 ppg on 41.6% shooting from the field. The Monarchs are averaging 8.1 three-pointers per game on 36.0% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Old Dominion has been led by B.J. Stith (18.2 ppg, 8.2 rpg, 1.1 apg, 1.0 spg), Ahmad Caver (17.6 ppg, 4.1 rpg, 5.7 apg, 1.6 spg), Xavier Green (8.1 ppg, 4.1 rpg, 1.7 apg), and Marquis Godwin (7.2 ppg, 2.5 rpg).
Defensively, Old Dominion is holding their opponents to an average of 57.5 ppg on 36.4% shooting from the field. The Monarchs have a rebound margin of 5.7 and a turnover margin of 1.0.
The Hilltoppers are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games vs. a team with a winning straight up record and 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games following an ATS win. The Monarchs are 7-2 ATS in their last 9 games overall and 6-2 ATS in their last 8 home games.
Western Kentucky comes into this game ranked just 205th in scoring offense & T-199th in scoring defense however, the Hilltoppers are a solid team that have wins already over Arkansas, Wisconsin, West Virginia, and Saint Mary’s (CA). Old Dominion had a rare off game defensively against Marshall, however, this Monarchs team is still one of the better defensive teams in all of College Basketball as they rank 5th in scoring defense & 4th in defensive FG%.
As good as Old Dominion is on the defensive end, they can certainly struggled offensively as they rank just 318th in scoring offense and only put up 67 points agianst Marshall’s 331st ranked scoring defense. Western Kentucky won’t be intimated going on the road after some of the teams they’ve played and beat already this season and as long as the Hilltoppers can put up 60-65 points in this one, I think they’ll at worst cover with the points. Take Western Kentucky and the points.
