Ole Miss Rebels -2.5 -- Over/Under: 142.5
The Alabama Crimson Tide and the Ole Miss Rebels meet in an SEC tournament second round matchup from the Bridgestone Arena in college basketball action on Thursday night.
The Alabama Crimson Tide come into the tournament as the #10 seed, finishing the year at 17-14, including 8-10 in conference play, losing out on the #9 seed due to a tiebreaker loss to Arkansas. Alabama scheduled some tough competition out of the gate with wins over Wichita State, Murray State, Arizona and Penn State as well as losses to UCF and Georgia State. Bama started conference play with a solid win over Kentucky and would go on to find issues with their consistency, splitting their first 16 conference games before dropping back-to-back games to finish the regular season and end conference play below .500. Kira Lewis Jr. led the Tide with 13.9 points and 2.9 assists per game while John Petty chipped in 10.6 points per game and Donta Hall came right behind with 10.5 points and a team-high 8.5 rebounds per game this season. As a team, Alabama is averaging 72.6 points per game on 44.6% shooting from the field, 34% from behind the arc and 66.9% from the foul line this season.
The Ole Miss Rebels come into the conference tournament as the #7 seed, finishing with an overall record of 20-11, including a 10-8 mark in conference play, losing out on the #6 seed to rival Mississippi State due to a tiebreaker. Ole Miss had some stiff competition in their own right in the non-conference portion of their schedule, with losses to Butler and Cincinnati as well as wins over Baylor and San Diego just to name a few. Ole Miss started conference play at 3-0 and 4-1 before falling back to .500 with 3 straight conference losses. The Rebels picked up steam down the stretch, winning 4 straight and 5 of 6 before losing 3 in a row and ending the year on a high note with a win over Missouri to clinch an above-.500 record in conference play on the year. Breein Tyree led the Rebels in scoring with 18.5 points per game while Terence Davis came 2nd with 15.5 points along with team-high averages of 5.8 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game. Devontae Shuler came in as Ole Miss’ 3rd double-digit scorer with 10.1 points per game this season. As a team, Ole Miss is averaging 76 points per game on 46.2% shooting from the field, 36.1% from behind the arc and 78.5% from the foul line, the 3rd-best free throw percentage in the country this season.
Alabama is 1-7 ATS in their last 8 games overall and 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games against a team with a winning record while the under is 8-1 in their last 9 conference games. Ole Miss is 24-8 ATS in their last 32 games overall and 4-0 ATS in their last 4 conference games while the under is 7-3 in their last 10 games overall. The favorite is 4-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings between these two teams.
The Tide won the lone meeting between the two teams and did so easily with a 21-point win in January. However, the Rebels have still be one of the more profitable plays in the country in terms of covering the spread this season, and while anything can happen in these tournament games, I just think that Ole Miss’ depth will be too much for Alabama to handle so I’ll lay the points with Ole Miss here.
