Purdue Boilermakers -7 -- Over/Under: 137
The Purdue Boilermakers and the Penn State Nittany Lions meet in Big Ten conference college basketball action from the Bryce Jordan Center on Thursday night.
The Purdue Boilermakers will look to build on their current 5-game winning streak after a huge 73-63 win over Michigan State in their last outing. Ryan Cline led the Boilermakers with 17 points on 6 of 14 shooting with 5 threes and a team-high 4 assists while Carsen Edwards added 14 points with 3 threes and 3 steals. Nojel Eastern added 12 points and 11 rebounds while Aaron Wheeler added 11 points on a perfect 4 of 4 shooting with 3 threes in just 15 minutes. Matt Haarms added 10 points, 8 rebounds and a pair of blocks to round out the scoring in double figures for Purdue in the win while Grady Eifert added 3 steals as well in the win. Edwards leads Purdue with an average of 24.2 points and 3.4 assists per game while Eifert leads Purdue in rebounding with 5 rebounds per game this season. As a team, Purdue is averaging 78 points per game on 45.1% shooting from the field, 38% from behind the arc and 72.7% from the foul line this season.
The Penn State Nittany Lions will be out to snap a 7-game losing streak following a 64-60 loss to Rutgers in their last outing. Lamar Stevens led the Nittany Lions with 21 points along with 8 rebounds, a pair of steals and a pair of blocks while Myles Dread and Rasir Bolton each had 11 points to round out the trio of double-digit scorers for Penn State in the loss, with Dread adding 3 threes. Mike Watkins added 7 points and a team-high 9 rebounds with a pair of blocks while Jamari Wheeler dished out a team-high 4 assists. Stevens leads Penn State with an average of 18.6 points and 7.8 rebounds per game while Josh Reaves leads the Nittany Lions in assists with 3.6 helpers per game this season. As a team, Penn State is averaging 67.4 points per game on 41% shooting from the field, 31.3% from behind the 3-point line and 67.3% from the foul line this season.
Purdue is 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games overall and 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games against a team with a losing record while the under is 21-8 in their last 29 games against a team with a winning percentage below .400. Penn State is 0-4 ATS in their last 4 home games and 3-10-1 ATS in their last 14 games overall while the under is 7-2 in their last 9 conference games. The underdog is 5-2 in the last 7 meetings between these two teams.
Purdue has a tendency to play down to lower opposition as of late, so I’m hesitant to back Purdue as a road favorite. However, the Boilermakers have to be the play here after how Purdue manhandled Michigan State in their last outing. Penn State has the talent, but just can’t seem to put positive results together and it’s not like being at home has helped matters as the Nittany Lions have gone 0-5 SU at home in conference play this season, losing by an average of 9.4 points per game. I’ll lay the points with Purdue as more of a fade from Penn State right now.
