The Saint Mary’s Gaels will travel to Firestone Fieldhouse to take on the Pepperdine Waves this Saturday night in College Basketball action.

The Saint Mary’s Gaels had their 4-game winning streak snapped and dropped to 13-8 (4-2 WCC) on the season after being defeated by the BYU Cougars, 71-66, this past Thursday. Saint Mary’s struggled with turnovers against the BYU defense and couldn’t fight back after a 6-1 Cougars run gave BYU a 67-60 lead with 1:35 left in regulation. Saint Mary’s shot just 25.0% from beyond the arc and lost the turnover battle by a 15-2 margin in the loss. Leading the way for the Gaels was Malik Fitts who had 19 points, 5 rebounds and a block.

On the season, Saint Mary’s is averaging 76.6 ppg on 48.6% shooting from the field. The Gaels are averaging 7.9 three-pointers per game on 38.8% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Saint Mary’s has been led by Jordan Ford (21.9 ppg, 2.4 rpg, 2.9 apg, 1.5 spg), Malik Fitts (15.1 ppg, 7.8 rpg, 1.2 apg, 1.2 spg), Jordan Hunter (9.4 ppg, 5.9 rpg, 1.0 apg), and Tanner Krebs (9.0 ppg, 4.2 rpg).

Defensively, Saint Mary’s is holding their opponents to an average of 65.5 ppg on 43.9% shooting from the field. The Gaels have a rebound margin of 5.1 and a turnover margin of 0.5.

The Pepperdine Waves lost their 2nd straight game and dropped to 9-11 (2-4 WCC) on the season after being defeated by the Loyola Marymount Lions, 74-70, this past Saturday. Pepperdine struggled defensively agianst Loyola Marymount and couldn’t fight back after the Lions took a 68-58 lead with 5:05 left in regulation. Pepperdine allowed Loyola Marymount to shoot 51.9% from the field and was outrebounded by the Lions by a 34-28 margin in the loss. Leading the way for the Waves was Kameron Edwards who had 22 points, 6 rebounds, 1 assist, and a steal.

On the season, Pepperdine is averaging 77.5 ppg on 44.1% shooting from the field. The Waves are averaging 9.2 three-pointers per game on 37.0% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Pepperdine has been led by Colbey Ross (18.6 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 7.2 apg, 1.0 spg), Kameron Edwards (17.3 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 1.0 apg), Eric Cooper Jr. (11.7 ppg, 2.3 rpg), and Kessler Edwards (10.1 ppg, 5.1 rpg, 1.0 apg, 1.3 spg).

Defensively, Pepperdine is allowing their opponents to average 74.3 ppg on 46.3% shooting from the field. The Waves have a rebound margin of -4.9 and a turnover margin of 4.1.

The Gaels are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 Saturday games and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall. The Waves are 10-2 ATS in their last 12 games vs. WCC opponents and 10-3 ATS in their last 13 home games.

Saint Mary’s has won 4 of their last 6 games and come into this game ranked 106th in scoring offense, 26th in FG%, and 39th in scoring defense. Pepperdine has lost 4 of their last 5 games and although their offense ranks 84th in scoring offense, the defense has struggled as the Waves currently rank just 250th in scoring defense & 296th in scoring defense.

Saint Mary’s is the better team however, the Gaels have struggled on the road this season as they’ve posted just a 2-3 record. Pepperdine recently had competitive games at home against San Francisco & BYU and as they have the three-point shooting to keep this game competitive, I think the Waves do enough to cover with the points.
