The St. Louis Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Pirates will kick off their MLB series on Monday.
The Cards are setting up with veteran Adam Wainwright in the start Monday. Wainwright had some major elbow issues last season, and only started eight games for the Cardinals. He went 2-4 with a 4.46 ERA over 40.1 innings in those appearances.
St. Louis blew three of four games in their set against the Brewers this weekend. On Sunday in a 5-4 loss, Matt Carpenter bagged a couple of hits, as did Kolton Wong.
Over on the Pirates’ side, they’re going with Chris Archer in the start Monday. Last year, Archer started 17 games and put up a 3-5 record, a 4.31 ERA, 102 hits and 102 Ks in 96.0 innings overall.
Pittsburgh only has a couple of games under their belt so far (one matchup was postponed), and they’re 1-1 so far. In the 5-0 win Sunday versus the Reds, Pitt’s Adam Frazier bagged a couple of hits, as did veteran Melky Cabrera.
The Cardinals are 2-7 ATS in their last nine overall and 2-5 in their last seven road games. St. Louis is 4-1 in Wainwright’s last five Monday starts and 11-5 in his last 16 starts.
Meanwhile, the Pirates are 9-2 in the last 11 home games and 8-3 in the last 11 versus a right-handed starter. The under is 3-1-1 in Archer’s last five overall and 30-14-1 in the Pirates’ last 45 overall.
Well, this will be interesting. We haven’t seen Wainwright in a while, and it’s his second (mostly) missed season in the past four. Needless to say, he hasn’t been out there much.
When Wainwright has pitched, his ERA has been pretty inflated, so I don’t expect much out of him—even if he does stay healthy.
That said, Archer has been really inconsistent as well, and his role has diminished in past years. This is something of a coin flip, but if Wainwright can catch some of that old mojo he might be okay. I’ll go Cards.
