Dunkin' Donuts Center
Providence Friars -6 -- Over/Under: 134.5
The Xavier Musketeers and the Providence Friars meet in Big East college basketball action from the Dunkin’ Donuts Center on Saturday afternoon.
The Xavier Musketeers will look to build some momentum after snapping a 6-game losing skid with a 64-61 overtime win over Creighton in their last outing. Naji Marshall led the Musketeers with 23 points on 9 of 22 shooting with 5 threes, 7 rebounds and a team-high 5 assists while Tyrique Jones added 12 points and Zach Hankins added 10 points with 3 blocks, each with 6 rebounds to round out the trio of double-digit scorers for Xavier in the win. Paul Scruggs added a team-high 8 rebounds and a pair of blocks while Quentin Goodin contributed 7 points with 4 assists and 4 steals as well in the winning effort for Xavier. Marshall leads Xavier with an average of 13.8 points and 3.4 assists per game while Jones leads the Musketeers on the glass with 7.2 rebounds per game this season. As a team, Xavier is averaging 72 points per game on 46.2% shooting from the field, 32.8% from behind the arc and 69.8% from the foul line this season.
The Providence Friars could use a win after dropping 4 of their last 5 games following an 85-67 loss to Villanova in their last outing. Nate Watson led the Friars with 18 points on 8 of 13 shooting with 6 rebounds while Alpha Diallo added 11 points with a team-high 7 rebounds and 4 assists as the only other Providence player to score in double figures in the losing effort. Isaiah Jackson added 8 points along with a team-high 6 assists as well in the defeat. Diallo leads the Friars with an average of 16.8 points, 8.3 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game this season. As a team, Providence is averaging 71.6 points per game on 42% shooting from the field, 33.1% from behind the arc and 69.2% from the foul line this season.
Xavier is 0-4 ATS in their last 4 road games and 1-6 ATS in their last 7 conference games while the under is 4-0 in their last 4 games overall. Providence is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 home games and 2-8 ATS in their last 10 games against a team with a losing record while the under is 5-0 in their last 5 games following a loss. Xavier is 0-5 ATS in the last 5 meetings between these two teams and 1-4 ATS in the last 5 meetings between these two teams at Providence.
Neither of these two are teams that I’m trying to side with right now given their recent struggles, and while points are tempting with Xavier, the fact is that Providence needs this game to snap out of their funk and the Friars have had the bulk of the success when these two have met in recent years. Xavier has lost their last 4 conference road games by an average of 14.2 points per game and I expect that to continue here as the Friars pick up a much needed win and cover here.
