The Illinois Fighting Illini and the Purdue Boilermakers meet in Big Ten college basketball action from the Mackey Arena on Wednesday night.

The Illinois Fighting Illini will look to rebound from back-to-back losses after an 83-76 loss to Penn State last time out. Ayo Dosunmu led the Illini with 18 points with 3 assists. Andres Feliz added 17 points on 7 of 11 shooting while Giorgi Bezhanishvili added 16 points with 10 rebounds for the double-double. Trent Frazier added 11 points to round out the quartet of double-digit scorers for Illinois in the losing effort. Frazier leads Illinois in scoring with 14.3 points per game while Bezhanishvili leads the Fighting Illini in rebounding with 5.2 rebounds per game and Dosunmu leads Illinois in assists with 3.2 assists per game this season. As a team, Illinois is averaging 73.9 points per game on 43.2% shooting from the field, 34.1% from behind the arc and 68.7% from the foul line this season.

The Purdue Boilermakers will look to build on their current 3-game winning streak after a 75-72 win over Nebraska in their last outing. Matt Haarms led the Boilermakers with 17 points on 5 of 9 shooting with a 7 of 7 mark from the foul line and a team-high 9 rebounds. Carsen Edwards and Ryan Cline each had 13 points to round out the trio of double-digit scorers for Purdue in the win, with Cline shooting 4 of 10 with 3 threes and a team-high 5 assists while Edwards shot just 3 of 16 from the floor, including 1 for 10 from 3-point range. Grady Eifery and Nojel Eastern each had 9 points with Eifert adding 8 rebounds while Eastern had 6 rebounds and a pair of assists. Edwards leads Purdue with an average of 23.4 points and 3.2 assists per game while Eastern leads the Boilermakers on the glass with 5.6 rebounds per game this season. As a team, Purdue is averaging 76.6 points per game on 44.5% shooting from the field, 36.5% from behind the arc and 74.4% from the foul line this season.

Illinois is 5-2 ATS in their last 7 road games and 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games against a team with a winning record while the over is 5-2-1 in their last 8 Wednesday games. Purdue is 0-3-1 ATS in their last 4 games overall and 1-5-1 ATS in their last 7 games against a team with a losing record while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 Wednesday games. Illinois is 1-4 ATS in the last 5 meetings between these two teams at Purdue.

I have no qualms about Purdue being favored here as the Boilermakers as the better team and have been in better form as of late. However, while Illinois has had issues on the road in this matchup, the Illini have been solid on the road and have been able to step up to the challenge when taking on above average competition as of late. Purdue appears to have taken their foot off of the gas a little bit and is allowing teams to hang around that the Boilermakers for all intents and purposes should probably be beating in a bit more convincing fashion. I’ll take a shot with Illinois and the points in this one as I think the Illini have put enough together to hang around in this contest.

Pick:
Illinois +13.5
