The Purdue Boilermakers face the Virginia Cavaliers in an Elite 8 college basketball matchup.
The Purdue Boilermakers outlasted the Tennessee Volunteers 99-94 in overtime on Thursday to advance to the Elite 8.
Purdue squandered a 14 point halftime lead and needed a pair of free throws from Carsen Edwards in the final second to go to OT after he was fouled on a three point attempt.
Edwards carried the Boilermakers with a game high 29 points with four pulls and three assists while Ryan Kline added 27 points on the strength of 7-10 from deep.
Nojel Eastern and Matt Haarms gave Virginia eleven points each and a combined eleven rebounds followed by Grady Eifert with seven points and nine rebounds.
The Virginia Cavaliers edged the Oregon Ducks 53-49 on Thursday in a Sweet 16 match up as an 8.5 point favorite to secure a spot in the Elite 8.
Virginia appeared to be heading for a big win with a 30-22 lead after 20 minutes but could not put one of the hottest teams in the tournament away until the final seconds.
Ty Jerome topped the balanced Virginia offense with 13 points, six boards and six steals with Kihei Clark tossing in 12 points with four pulls and six assists.
The Cavaliers saw eleven points and four yanks from De’Andre Hunter while Kyle Guy and Mamadi Diakite combined for 17 points with Diakite hauling in eleven points.
Purdue Boilermakers are 5-1-1 ATS in their last 7 Saturday games and are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall and are 9-4 ATS in their last 13 NCAA Tournament games and are 41-19 ATS in their last 60 non-conference games.
Virginia Cavaliers are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 vs. Big Ten and are 17-7 ATS in their last 24 non-conference games and are 44-20-1 ATS in their last 65 games overall and are 1-6 ATS in their last 7 NCAA Tournament games.
The Boilermakers might have been overlooked by many coming in to the tournament but I’m sure this team is got everyone’s attention now. Purdue was clutch down the stretch against Tennessee and now face a Virginia squad that seems to be doing just enough to stay alive. The Cavaliers could very well squeeze out another one but I certainly won’t lay the points against a solid Purdue squad…
