The Line: Rhode Island Rams -9.5 -- Over/Under:
The Florida Gulf Coast Eagles will travel to the Ryan Center to take on the Rhode Island Rams this Wednesday night in College Basketball action.
The Florida Gulf Coast Eagles lost their 3rd straight game and dropped to 7-7 on the season after being defeated by the 11th ranked Wichita State Shockers, 75-65, this past Friday night. Florida Gulf Coast gave Wichita State all they could handle, however, couldn’t pull off the upset victory after the Eagles closed out the final 4:45 of regulation on a 14-4 run. Florida Gulf Coast shot 36.8% from the field and 40.9% (9-22) from beyond the arc in the loss. Leading the way for the Eagles was Brandon Goodwin who had 20 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and a steal. On the season, Florida Gulf Coast is averaging 81.5 ppg on 48.1% shooting from the field. The Eagles are averaging 7.4 three-pointers per game on 36.6% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Florida Gulf Coast has been led by Brandon Goodwin (18.9 ppg, 5.4 rpg, 4.8 apg, 1.1 spg), Zach Johnson (13.8 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 2.7 apg, 2.1 spg), Christian Terrell (13.6 ppg, 5.7 rpg, 2.2 apg), and Christian Carlyle (7.0 ppg, 2.8 rpg, 1.1 apg). Defensively, Florida Gulf Coast is allowing their opponents to average 74.6 ppg on 44.1% shooting from the field. The Eagles have a rebound margin of 5.5 and a turnover margin of -0.6.
The Rhode Island Rams won their 2nd straight game and improved to 7-3 on the season after defeating the Iona Gaels, 80-74, this past Thursday. Rhode Island found themselves down by a 43-36 margin early in the 2nd half, however, was able to fight back and secure the win after a 19-10 Rams run gave Rhode Island a 74-66 lead with just 1:04 left in regulation. Rhode Island shot 42.4% from the field and won the turnover battle by a 14-9 margin in the victory. Leading the way for the Rams was Jared Terrell who had 23 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and 3 steals. On the season, Rhode Island is averaging 75.6 ppg on 46.2% shooting from the field. The Rams are averaging 5.9 three-pointers per game on 36.0% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Rhode Island has been led by Jared Terrell (17.8 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 2.5 apg, 1.9 spg), Stanford Robinson (10.2 ppg, 6.0 rpg, 1.8 apg, 2.9 spg), E.C. Matthews (9.5 ppg, 2.0 rpg), and Jeff Dowtin (8.2 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 4.2 apg, 1.1 spg). Defensively, Rhode Island is allowing their opponents to average 69.2 ppg on 46.7% shooting from the field. The Rams have a rebound margin of -1.2 and a turnover margin of 5.7.
The Eagles are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games following an ATS win and 16-4-1 ATS in their last 21 road games. The Rams are 13-5-1 ATS in their last 19 games following a straight up win and 11-5-1 ATS in their last 17 games overall.
Florida Gulf Coast has lost 5 of their last 6 games and although they are a decent offensive team, the Eagles have struggled defensively as the Eagles rank just 230th in scoring defense and 201st in defensive FG%. Rhode Island has won 4 of their last 5 games and have been solid on the defensive end as the Rams rank 119th in scoring defense and 7th in turnover margin. Rhode Island just got back E.C. Matthews which should help the Rams offense and as I think the Rams defense will gave Florida Gulf Coast some trouble on their home court and that Rhode Island does enough to cover this spread.
