Rhode Island Rams -1 -- Over/Under: 131.5
VCU and Rhode Island meet in a battle of the Rams in A-10 conference college basketball action from Thomas M. Ryan Center on Wednesday night.
The VCU Rams will look to build on back-to-back wins after a 68-50 win over UMass in their last outing. De’Riante Jenkins led VCU with 17 points on 5 of 7 shooting from the field with a perfect 4 of 4 mark from 3-point range along with team-highs of 7 rebounds and a pair of steals. Issac Vann added 16 points as the only other Virginia Commonwealth player to score in double figures in the winning effort while Marcus Evans added 8 points along with a team-high 6 assists as well in the win. Evans leads VCU with an average of 13.4 points and 2.6 assists per game while Marcus Santos-Silva leads VCU in rebounding with 6.8 rebounds per game this season. As a team, VCU is averaging 69.4 points per game on 42.1% shooting from the field, 30.2% from 3-point range and 68.6% from the foul line this season. VCU is also tough defensively, giving up 62.6 points per game with the 4th-lowest field goal and 3-point percentages against in the nation, allowing opponents to shoot just 37.5% from the field and 26.8% from 3-point range this season.
The Rhode Island Rams will also look to build on a pair of consecutive wins following a 78-67 road win over La Salle in their last outing. Jeff Dowtin led Rhode Island with 22 points on 8 of 13 shooting with a pair of threes and 3 steals while Fatts Russell added 20 points along with 6 rebounds and a team-high 4 assists. Cyril Langevine chipped in 19 points on 8 of 12 shooting with a game-high 14 rebounds and a pair of blocks for the double-double to round out the trio of double-digit scorers for URI in the winning effort. Dowtin leads Rhode Island with an average of 16.7 points and 4 assists per game while Langevine leads Rhode Island in rebounding by averaging a double-double per game with 14 points to go along with his team-leading 10.2 rebounds per game this season. As a team, Rhode Island is averaging 71.1 points per game on 42.9% shooting from the field, 26.8% from 3-point range and 67.1% from the foul line this season.
VCU is 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games against a team with a winning record and 8-20 ATS in their last 28 Wednesday games while the under is 13-5 in their last 18 games overall. Rhode Island is 2-5 ATS in their last 7 home games and 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games against a team with a winning record while the over is 4-0 in their last 4 games overall. The favorite is 7-0 ATS in the last 7 meetings between these two teams.
With the favorite having so much success in this matchup, and Rhode Island being favored in what is essentially a pick ‘em game, the first instinct would be to hop on Rhode Island here. However, Rhode Island hasn’t been that good at home as of late in terms of going up against the spread, while VCU has a solid defense that travels wherever they play. I think we are getting a free point with the better team, so even on the road, I’ll side with VCU to get the win here.
