The UAB Blazers will travel to Tudor Fieldhouse to take on the Rice Owls this Saturday night in College Basketball action.
The UAB Blazers won their 3rd straight game and improved to 13-7 (5-2 C-USA) on the season after defeating the North Texas Mean Green, 52-49, this past Thursday. In a game that featured little offense, UAB was able to snap the Mean Green’s 14-game winning streak after a 13-2 Blazers run gave UAB a 52-46 lead with :30 seconds left in regulation. UAB shot just 33.9% from the field, however, held North Texas to just 31.0% shooting from the field & 32.4% shooting from beyond the Zack Bryant who had 17 points, 5 assists, 1 rebound, and a steal.
On the season, UAB is averaging 70.2 ppg on 45.8% shooting from the field. The Blazers are averaging 6.4 three-pointers per game on 31.8% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, UAB has been led by Zack Bryant (13.0 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 3.8 apg, 1.8 spg), Jalen Perry (11.6 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 1.5 apg, 1.1 spg), Lewis Sullivan (11.2 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 1.1 apg), and Makhtar Gueye (7.6 ppg, 6.4 rpg, 1.0 apg).
Defensively, UAB is holding their opponents to an average of 65.8 ppg on 40.1% shooting from the field. The Blazers have a rebound margin of 6.6 and a turnover margin of -0.2.
The Rice Owls snapped a 3-game losing streak and improved to 8-12 (3-4 C-USA) on the season after defeating the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders, 79-68, this past Thursday. Rice dominated Middle Tennessee on the offensive end in the 2nd half and pulled away after a 16-0 Owls run gave Rice a 70-55 lead with 3:34 left in regulation. Rice shot 46.3% from the field and 36.4% shooting from beyond the arc in the victory. Leading the way for the Owls was Chris Mullins who had 19 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals, and a block.
On the season, Rice is averaging 75.5 ppg on 43.8% shooting from the field. The Owls are averaging 8.8 three-pointers per game on 34.2% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Rice has been led by Chris Mullins (12.8 ppg, 2.3 rpg, 2.4 apg, 1.5 spg), Robert Martin (12.1 ppg, 6.3 rpg, 1.9 apg, 1.0 spg), Ako Adams (11.7 ppg, 2.6 rpg, 2.9 apg), and Jack Williams (10.8 ppg, 7.9 rpg).
Defensively, Rice is allowing their opponents to average 78.6 ppg on 45.8% shooting from the field. The Owls have a rebound margin of 0.9 and a turnover margin of -2.1.
The Blazers are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a straight up win and 8-3 ATS in their last 11 games vs. C-USA opponents. The Owls are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall, however, just 2-5 ATS in their last 7 home games vs. a team with a losing road record.
UAB has won 6 of their last 8 games and although their offense can struggle to put up points as they rank just 258th in scoring offense, the Blazers have a solid defense that ranks 44th in scoring defense & 30th in defensive FG%. Rice has split their last 6 games and come into this game ranked 129th in scoring offense, 83rd in three-pointers per game, and 319th in scoring defense.
Rice is a solid home team as they are 7-4 at Tudor Fieldhouse this season and although their defense can give up some points, UAB is not the type of team that you really have to worry too much offensive. Rice has won their last 4 games at home and as I think their offense will have some success against the UAB defense, I’m taking the Owls and the points in this one.
