The Line: Saint Joseph's Hawks -6.5 -- Over/Under:
Coming up on Saturday from Hagan Arena, the UMass Minutemen and the Saint Joseph’s Hawks will be matching up on the college basketball court.
Massachusetts enters this one with a 11-13 record overall. The Minutemen had lost five straight games but took out Dayton last Saturday. In that game, UMass guard Luwane Pipkins managed 28 points.
Pipkins is also the leading scorer on the season for Massachusetts with 20.5 PPG and 4.0 APG. The only other Minutemen player in double-digits this year is Carl Pierre (12.0 PPG), but the academically ineligible Rahsaan Holloway is sitting at 9.9 PPG.
Over on the Saint Joseph’s side, they’re sitting at 9-14 on the year. The Hawks have lost their last five straight games, falling to Davidson on Tuesday. In that game, Saint Joseph’s Shavar Newkirk managed 16 points.
Newkirk and James Demery are leading the Hawks with 17.3 PPG apiece this season. Also in double-digits for Saint Joseph’s is Taylor Funk with 12.2 PPG and 4.3 RPG to his credit thus far.
The Minutemen are 7-3 ATS in the last 10 Saturday games and 1-4 ATS in their last five road games. The over is 4-0 in UMass’ last four overall and 4-0 in their last four versus the Atlantic 10.
Meanwhile, Saint Joseph’s is 4-1 ATS in their last five home games and the under is 6-2 in their last eight overall. The under is also 5-2 in the Hawks’ last seven versus the Atlantic 10 and 4-0 in their last four versus a team with a losing straight-up record.
After a couple of real dud performances on the offensive end, the Minutemen have put up at least 83 in each of their last two games. Saint Joseph’s isn’t doing much on either side of the ball these days, so I’m going with UMass for the cover here.
