The Line: Saint Mary's-California Gaels -12 -- Over/Under: 136
The Cal Golden Bears and the Saint Mary’s Gaels meet in college basketball action from McKeon Pavilion on Saturday night.
The Cal Golden Bears will be looking to get back to .500 after improving to 2-3 on the year thanks to a 78-66 win over Santa Clara in their last outing. Matt Bradley led the Bears with 18 points on 6 of 8 shooting with a 5 of 5 mark from the foul line while Andre Kelly and Paris Austin each added 13 points, with Austin adding a team-high 5 assists along with 3 steals. Juhwan Harris-Dyson added 12 points on 6 of 7 shooting with 4 steals while Justice Sueing added 11 points with a team-high 6 rebounds to round out the double-digit scoring for Cal in the winning effort. Austin leads Cal with an average of 15.6 points and 4.2 assists per game while Sueing leads the Golden Bears in rebounding with 6.8 rebounds per game this season. As a team, Cal is averaging 71 points per game on 48.2% shooting from the field, 42% from 3-point range and 69.6% from the foul line this season.
The Saint Mary’s Gaels will be looking for a win to snap a 4-game losing streak following an 80-75 loss to UC-Irvine in their last outing. Jordan Ford led the Gaels with a game-high 30 points on 10 of 16 shooting including a 9 of 12 mark from the foul line while Jordan Hunter added 13 points with a team-high 3 assists as the only other Saint Mary’s player to finish in double figures scoring in the losing effort. Malik Fitts added a team-high 9 rebounds as well in the loss for the Gaels. Ford leads Saint Mary’s in scoring and assists with an average of 23.1 points and 3.1 assists per game while Fitts leads the Gaels on the glass with 9.1 rebounds per game this season. As a team, Saint Mary’s is averaging 73.6 points per game on 45.1% shooting from the field, 35.4% from behind the arc and 74.5% from the foul line this season.
Cal is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 road games and 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games against the WCC while the under is 16-5 in their last 21 games overall. Saint Mary’s is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games against the Pac-12 and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games against a team with a losing record while the over is 4-0 in their last 4 home games.
This to me seems like a lot of points to lay given that Saint Mary’s has not looked very good during this losing skid and looks like a completely different Gaels team than we’ve become accustomed to seeing over the years, and not in a good way. Cal isn’t a world-beater by any means and is probably going to finish in the lower half of the Pac-12 this season, but that doesn’t mean that the Golden Bears can’t keep this game within single digits. I’ll take the points with Cal as more of a fade from Saint Mary’s than anything else.
