The Mercer Bears will travel to the Pete Hanna Center to take on the Samford Bulldogs this Saturday afternoon in College Basketball action.

The Mercer Bears lost their 2nd straight game and dropped to 6-12 (1-5 Southern) on the season after being defeated by the Chattanooga Mocs, 73-70, this past Thursday. In a tight back and forth game, Mercer was held scoreless for the final 2:42 of regulation and couldn’t fight back after Mercer took the lead on a pair of Donovann Toatley free-throws with 1:21 left in regulation. Mercer shot 45.8% from the field & 50.0% shooting from beyond the arc in the loss. Leading the way for the Bears was Ross Cummings who had 22 points, 3 rebounds, & 5 assists.

On the season, Mercer is averaging 73.4 ppg on 45.7% shooting from the field. The Bears are averaging 7.4 three-pointers per game on 34.1% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Mercer has been led by Ross Cummings (16.8 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 1.8 apg), Djordje Dimitrijevic (11.6 ppg, 2.6 rpg, 2.3 apg), Jaylen Stowe (11.0 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 1.2 apg, 1.2 spg), Ethan Stair (10.1 ppg, 4.9 rpg, 1.3 apg, 1.9 spg), and Marcus Cohen (5.8 ppg, 2.1 rpg, 3.4 apg).

Defensively, Mercer is allowing their opponents to average 69.9 ppg on 43.0% shooting from the field. The Bears have a rebound margin of -1.8 and a turnover margin of 2.2.

The Samford Bulldogs snapped their 3-game losing streak and improved to 12-7 (2-4 Southern) on the season after defeating The Citadel Bulldogs, 80-77, this past Thursday. Samford did an outstanding job containing the high scoring Citadel offense and was able to hang on for the victory after taking a 73-59 lead with 4:51 left in regulation. Samford held The Citadel to just 37.8% shooting from the field & 37.0% shooting from beyond the arc in the loss. Leading the way for the Bulldogs was Brandon Austin who had a double-double with 28 points, 10 rebounds, 4 steals, and an assist

On the season, Samford is averaging 77.2 ppg on 47.3% shooting from the field. The Bulldogs are averaging 7.5 three-pointers per game on 38.5% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Samford has been led by Josh Sharkey (15.1 ppg, 3.9 rpg, 6.7 apg, 2.7 spg), Ruben Guerrero (14.4 ppg, 8.3 rpg, 2.1 bpg), Brandon Austin (12.5 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 1.1 spg), and Robert Allen (9.3 ppg, 7.3 rpg, 1.8 apg).

Defensively, Samford is allowing their opponents to average 71.4 ppg on 40.4% shooting from the field. The Bulldogs have a rebound margin of 1.1 and a turnover margin of -0.3.

The Bears are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games following an ATS loss, however, are just 1-4 ATS in their last 5 road games vs. a team with a home winning % of greater than .600. The Bulldogs are 10-1 ATS in their last 11 games following a straight up win and 13-5 ATS in their last 18 games overall.

Mercer has lost 5 of their last 6 games and come into this game ranked 189th in scoring offense and 140th in scoring defense. Samford has also lost 5 of their last 7 games despite being ranked 97th in scoring offense, 61st in FG%, and 46th in defensive FG%.

Mercer is a tough team to bet as you just really don’t know which version of the Bears your going to get. Mercer easily covered on the road in tough games against Georgia State, NC State, and Wofford however, it’s hard to explain their recent loss on the road agianst a below average Chattanooga team. Samford is a dark horse contender in a tough Southern conference led by an explosive offense and as I think their offense will have success against the Bears defense at home, I’m taking Samford to cover this small home spread.

Pick:
Samford Bulldogs -4
