The Line: Arizona Diamondbacks +143 / San Diego Padres -155 -- Over/Under: 7.5
The Arizona Diamondbacks and San Diego Padres meet Monday in MLB action at Petco Park.
The Arizona Diamondbacks look to get back on track after losing three of four against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Diamondbacks pitching staff got rocked, allowing a combined 41 runs and 50 hits. While it’s just one series, there’s not much hope for the Diamondbacks this season if those numbers continue. The Arizona Diamondbacks have allowed four or more runs in 13 of their last 18 games. Adam Jones leads the Diamondbacks with seven hits and two RBI while David Peralta and Nick Ahmed have combined for 11 hits and six RBI. Merrill Kelly will make his major league debut when he takes the mound here. Kelly was 39-26 with a 3.40 ERA and 378 strikeouts in his minor league career.
The San Diego Padres look to keep the ball rolling after a solid 3-1 start. The Padres have allowed a combined five runs through their first four games and are averaging a strikeout per inning. We’ll obviously see what the Padres are truly capable of once the competition increases, but this is clearly an improved team from past years. The San Diego Padres are off to their first 3-1 start since 2011. Wil Myers leads the Padres with six hits and two RBI while Eric Hosmer and Austin Hedges have combined for eight hits and four RBI. Matt Strahm gets the ball, and he was 3-4 with a 2.05 ERA and 69 strikeouts last season. Strahm is 0-0 with a 2.89 ERA and 11 strikeouts in his career against the Diamondbacks.
The Diamondbacks are 6-15 in their last 21 vs. National League West, 0-6 in their last 6 Monday games and 9-22 in their last 31 overall. The Padres are 4-0 in their last 4 during game 1 of a series, 5-2 in their last 7 vs. National League West and 8-20 in their last 28 Monday games. The Diamondbacks are 8-3 in the last 11 meetings in San Diego and the under is 5-1 in the last 6 meetings. The under is 5-0 in Strahm's last 5 starts overall. The over is 4-1 in Diamondbacks last 5 overall.
While I'm still cautious about buying stock in the San Diego Padres, there's no doubt they're an improved and much more confident baseball team. The Arizona Diamondbacks weren't going up against the easiest lineup in baseball, but allowing over 10 runs per game to start the season is truly fade material. You can't back the Diamondbacks with any sort of confidence until further notice. I have no choice but to side with the San Diego Padres, as the Diamondbacks have had the worst start of any team in baseball.
