The San Diego Toreros will travel to Viejas Arena to take on the San Diego State Aztecs this Wednesday night in College Basketball action.
The San Diego Toreros improved to 6-2 on the season after defeating the Long Beach State 49ers, 74-70, this past Saturday. San Diego allowed Long Beach State to fight back from a double-digit deficit in the 2nd half to tie the game late, however, the Toreros were able to secure the victory after a pair of Olin Carter III FT’s gave San Diego the lead for good with 31 seconds left in regulation. San Diego shot 44.6% from the field and 40.0% from beyond the arc in the victory. Leading the way for the Toreros was Olin Carter III who had 21 points and a block.
On the season, San Diego is averaging 77.9 ppg on 47.1% shooting from the field. The Toreros are averaging 8.5 three-pointers per game on 36.0% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, San Diego has been led by Isaiah Pineiro (21.3 ppg, 8.1 rpg, 2.9 apg, 1.6 spg), Olin Carter III (17.6 ppg, 2.5 rpg, 1.9 apg), Isaiah Wright (12.1 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 5.0 apg, 1.3 spg), and Tyler Williams (7.8 ppg, 4.8 rpg, 3.6 apg).
Defensively, San Diego is holding their opponents to an average of 65.1 ppg on 42.6% shooting from the field. The Toreros have a rebound margin of 4.9 and a turnover margin of 1.4.
The San Diego State Aztecs won their 2nd straight game and improved to 5-2 on the season after defeating the Illinois State Redbirds, 75-65, this past Saturday. San Diego State was outstanding defensively against Illinois State and pulled away after an 8-0 Aztecs run gave San Diego State a 63-49 lead with 8:39 left in regulation. San Diego State shot 45.0% from the field while holding Illinois State to just 31.0% shooting from the field and 20.8% shooting from beyond the arc. Leading the way for the Aztecs was Devin Watson who had 23 points, 7 assists, and 3 rebounds.
On the season, San Diego State is averaging 77.3 ppg on 45.0% shooting from the field. The Aztecs are averaging 8.6 three-pointers per game on 38.0% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, San Diego State has been led by Devin Watson (15.9 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 4.7 apg), Jalen McDaniels (14.6 ppg, 8.0 rpg, 2.4 apg, 1.1 spg), Matt Mitchell (12.7 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 1.7 apg), and Jeremy Hemsley (10.9 ppg, 2.4 rpg, 2.4 apg, 1.4 spg).
Defensively, San Diego State is allowing their opponents to average 69.1 ppg on 38.6% shooting from the field. The Aztecs have a rebound margin of 1.9 and a turnover margin of 0.1.
The Toreros are 20-9-1 ATS in their last 20 road games however, just 3-12-1 ATS in their last 16 games following an ATS loss. The Aztecs are 9-2 ATS in their last 11 games vs. a team with a winning straight up record and 15-5-1 ATS in their last 21 home games.
The early money looks like it’s all going on San Diego State however, I don’t think we should overlook the Toreros in this one as this is a talented team with three outstanding players in Isaiah Pineiro, Olin Carter III, and Isaiah Wright. San Diego’s two losses came in close battles on the road against Washington & Ole Miss and as they have a defense that ranks 57th in scoring defense and T-88th in rebound margin, I think the Toreros do enough with the points to cover.
