Santa Clara, CA
SCU -, SCU -16
The Cal Poly Mustangs open their season with a game against the Santa Clara Broncos in a game that the Mustangs will simply just be looking to compete. The Mustangs enter the season with a new coach as John Smith will look to have is team be the surprise team in the Big West Conference as the Mustangs have finished above the .500 mark in league play 4 times in the last 20 years. With the exit of Donovan Fields and Marcellus Garrick who were the two leading scorers last season for Cal Poly, it will be up to junior, Mark Crowe to lead the Mustangs on offense. Last year Crowe scored 10 points per game while also averaging 4.6 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game.
The Santa Clara Broncos welcome the Cal Poly Mustangs into town after winning their last game against UC Santa Cruz by the score of 97-52. Forward DJ Mitchell led the way for the Broncos as he recorded team highs in points with 18 and rebounds with 7, including 2 coming on the offensive boards. Guard Trey Wertz led the Santa Clara in assists with 5 while playing 21 minutes in the game.
Last year Cal Poly scored 66.6 points per game last season while allowing 75.3 points per game. After one game this season, Santa Clara is scoring 97 points per game while allowing 52 points per game. In this game I will be going with the Santa Clara Broncos. The Broncos clearly have enough fire power on offense to outscore the teams they play from smaller schools and it will be on display in this game. Santa Clara wins 90-65 and covers the spread.
