The Saint Mary's Gaels and Santa Clara Broncos meet Thursday in college basketball action at the Leavey Center.
The Saint Mary's Gaels look for a win after splitting their last six games. The Saint Mary's Gaels are averaging 75.8 points on 47.8 percent shooting and allowing 68 points on 45.2 percent shooting. Jordan Ford is averaging 21.6 points and 2.8 assists while Malik Fitts is averaging 16 points and 7.6 rebounds. Jordan Hunter is grabbing 6.1 rebounds and Tanner Krebs is grabbing four rebounds. The Saint Mary's Gaels are shooting 37.8 percent from beyond the arc and 75.1 percent from the free throw line. The Saint Mary's Gaels are allowing 33.3 percent shooting from deep and are grabbing 32 rebounds per game. The Saint Mary's Gaels have lost five of their last six road games.
The Santa Clara Broncos could also use a win after splitting their last 12 games. The Santa Clara Broncos are averaging 68.9 points on 44.6 percent shooting and allowing 72.2 points on 43.3 percent shooting. Tahj Eaddy is averaging 14.6 points and 3.3 assists while Josip Vrankic is averaging 13.7 points and 6.7 rebounds. Trey Wertz is the third double-digit scorer and Keshawn Justice is dishing 1.7 assists. The Santa Clara Broncos are shooting 35.6 percent from beyond the arc and 69.7 percent from the free throw line. The Santa Clara Broncos are allowing 31.6 percent shooting from deep and are grabbing 31.8 rebounds per game. The Santa Clara Broncos have won seven of their last nine home games.
The Gaels are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 road games, 1-4 ATS in their last 5 vs. West Coast and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall. The Broncos are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 home games vs. a team with a losing road record. The under is 47-18-3 in Gaels last 68 road games The under is 5-1 in Broncos last 6 home games. The Gaels are 6-1-1 ATS in the last 8 meetings in Santa Clara and 12-3-3 ATS in the last 18 meetings.
The Saint Mary's Gaels clearly aren't the same team from past years, as the inconsistency is real, especially on the road where they've lost five of the last six and the offense is shooting just 41.9 percent from the field. You almost never see Saint Mary's struggle offensively. The Santa Clara Broncos would be worth a look with the free points if they weren't being outscored by an average of 11.8 points in their last five games and they didn't lose to the Gaels by 20 points less than a month ago. The Saint Mary's Gaels have beaten Santa Clara like a drum over the years and have won the last three meetings by an average of 23.6 points. I gave Santa Clara strong consideration, but it's tough to ignore that history.
