The Longwood Lancers and the USC-Upstate Spartans meet in Big South college basketball action from the Hodge Center on Thursday evening.
The Longwood Lancers will try to climb some ranks in the conference standings, sitting at 6-9 in conference play after picking up a 76-68 win over Hampton in their last outing. Juan Munoz leads the Lancers in scoring and assists with 10.8 points and 3.3 assists per game while Shabooty Phillips is 2nd in scoring with 10.7 PPG and Jordan Cintron leads the Lancers in rebounding with 6.5 RPG this season. As a team, Longwood is averaging 68.3 points on 40.5% shooting from the field, 34.3% from 3-point range and 71.5% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 69.6 points on 44% shooting from the field and 35.3% from 3-point range this season. Longwood is 4-11 straight up and 5-9-1 against the spread on the road this season.
The USC-Upstate Spartans will also try to make some moves in the Big South table, sitting at 6-8 in conference after a 3rd loss in their last 4 games following a 62-54 loss to High Point last time out. Everette Hammond leads the Spartans in scoring and rebounding with 14.3 PPG and 4.6 RPG while Tommy Bruner is 2nd in scoring with 14 PPG and Dalvin White leads the Spartans in assists with 3.8 APG this season. As a team, USC-Upstate is averaging 68.8 points on 42.5% shooting from the field, 31.2% from 3-point range and 68.9% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 73.2 points on 45.7% shooting from the field and 34.5% from 3-point range this season. USC-Upstate is 8-4 straight up and 8-2 against the spread at home this season.
The free point with Longwood is tempting given that the Lancers have been playing the better ball as of late against the number. However, the Lancers haven’t been all that good on the road, and the line is low enough that the straight up records home and away hold some merit. I’ll lay the bucket with the Spartans at home in this one.
