The Marquette Golden Eagles lost their 4th straight game and dropped to 13-10 (4-7 Big East) on the season after being defeated by the Providence Friars, 77-75, this past Saturday. Marquette struggled from beyond the arc throughout the game and although they fought back to have a chance late after being down an 11-point margin with under five minutes to play, the Golden Eagles turned the ball over with 0:03 seconds left which sealed the victory for Providence. Marquette shot 49.0% from the field and 25.0% (4-16) from beyond the arc in the loss. Leading the way for the Golden Flashes was Markus Howard who had 16 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals. On the season, Marquette is averaging 81.7 ppg on 47.2 shooting from the field. The Golden Eagles are averaging 10.7 three-pointers per game on 39.5% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensviely, Marquette has been led by Markus Howard (21.6 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 2.9 apg), Andrew Rowsey (19.0 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 4.0 apg, 1.1 spg), Sam Hauser (14.0 ppg, 5.7 rpg, 2.9 apg, 1.1 spg), and Sacar Anim (6.7 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 1.8 apg). The Seton Hall Pirates had their 2-game winning streak snapped and dropped to 17-6 (6-4 Big East) on the season after being defeated by the top-ranked Villanova Wildcats, 92-76, this past Sunday. Seton Hall played Villanova tough for the majority of the game, however, struggled defensively down the stretch and couldn’t fight back after Villanova took a 85-69 lead with 3:08 left in regulation. Seton Hall allowed Villanova to shoot 50.8% from the field and 41.4% (12-29) from beyond the arc in the loss. Leading the way for the Pirates was Desi Rodriguez who had 20 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists. On the season, Seton Hall is averaging 78.3 ppg on 47.4% shooting from the field. The Pirates are averaging 7.1 three-pointers per game on 36.6% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Seton Hall has been led by Desi Rodriguez (17.4 ppg, 5.1 rpg, 2.3 apg, 1.0 spg), Myles Powell (14.6 ppg, 2.2 rpg, 2.6 apg, 1.1 spg), Khadeen Carrington (14.0 ppg, 2.9 rpg, 4.4 apg, 1.2 spg), and Angel Delgado (13.4 ppg, 12.0 rpg, 3.0 apg, 1.0 bpg). Defensively, Seton Hall is allowing their opponents to average 70.9 ppg on 42.7% shooting from the field. The Pirates have a rebound margin of 4.5 and a turnover margin of -0.1.
The Golden Eagles are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games following an ATS loss however, just 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600. The Pirates are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following an ATS loss and 8-3 ATS in their last 11 games following a straight up loss.
Marquette comes into this game needing a win as the Golden Eagles have lost 6 of their last 8 games which included a 20-point loss at home against Seton Hall. The Golden Flashes have one of the best backcourts in the country in Markus Howard and Andrew Rowsey, however, the Golden Eagles have struggled on the defensive end as they come into this game ranked 297th in scoring defense and 323rd in defensive FG%. Seton Hall has lost 4 of their last 7 games, however, the Pirates have been solid on both ends of the court as they currently rank 73rd in scoring offense, 53rd in FG%, and 144th in scoring defense. Seton Hall was impressive against the high scoring Marquette squad in their first matchup of the season and as the Pirates offense should have no problems scoring the basketball at home in this one, I’m taking Seton Hall to cover this spread.
