The Iona Gaels and the Siena Saints meet in college basketball MAAC-tion from the Times Union Center on Wednesday night.
The Iona Gaels will try to escape out of a logjam in the middle of the MAAC standings, sitting at 7-7 in conference play after a 78-70 win over Marist for their 4th straight win. E.J. Crawford leads the Gaels in scoring with 17.9 PPG, while Tajuan Agee is 2nd in scoring and tops in rebounding with 13.8 PPG and 7.5 RPG this season. Isaiah Washington is 3rd with 11.2 PPG as well as a team-high 3.4 assists per game while Isaiah Ross and Asante Gist each have 10.1 PPG this season. As a team, Iona is averaging 69.6 points on 43.2% shooting from the field, 33.2% from behind the arc and 75.9% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 71.6 points on 43.2% shooting from the field and 38.3% from 3-point range this season. Iona is 3-6 straight up and 3-6 against the spread on the road this season.
The Siena Saints will try to keep pace at the top of the conference table, sitting at 9-5 after a 3rd straight win in the form of a 65-52 win over Manhattan last time out. Jalen Pickett leads the Saints in scoring and assists with 15.5 PPG and 5.6 APG while Elijah Burns is 2n in scoring with 14.6 PPG and Manny Camper is 3rd in scoring and tops in rebounding, averaging a double-double per game with 13.6 PPG and 10.2 RPG. Donald Carey also has 11.4 PPG for the Saints this year. As a team, Siena is averaging 73 points per game on 45.4% shooting from the field, 34.7% from behind the arc and 68.9% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 69.8 points on 43.9% shooting from the field and 33% from behind the 3-point line this season. Siena is 12-0 straight up and 8-4 against the spread at home this season.
Head-to-head, the underdog is 12-2 ATS in the last 14 meetings between these two teams.
I’m tempted by the points with Iona on their recent hot run, but the problem is that most of the success came at home and the success on the road came against lesser teams within the conference. Siena has been a different beast at home where the Saints are unbeaten and outscoring teams by 11 points per game. Siena may also only have 1 win on the road this season, but that win was a 23-point beatdown against these same Iona Gaels. I just think Siena has the upper hand here and at home, the Saints get the job done with a win and cover in this one.
