SMU Mustangs -6.5 -- Over/Under: 146.5
The UConn Huskies will travel to Moody Coliseum to take on the SMU Mustangs this Thursday night in College Basketball action.
The UConn Huskies lost their 3rd straight game and dropped to 13-12 (4-8 AAC) on the season after being defeated by the 9th ranked Houston Cougars, 71-63, this past Thursday. UConn struggled defensively against the Cougars and couldn’t fight back after Houston took a 51-35 lead midway though the 2nd half. UConn shot 41.2% from the field while allowing Houston to shoot 48.1% from the field and 52.4% from beyond the arc. Leading the way for the Huskies was Christian Vital who had 15 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists.
On the season, UConn is averaging 76.6 ppg on 45.7% shooting from the field. The Huskies are averaging 7.8 three-pointers per game on 35.3% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, UConn has been led by Jalen Adams (17.0 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 3.0 apg, 1.1 spg), Christian Vital (14.0 ppg, 6.1 rpg, 2.5 apg, 1.6 spg), Alterique Gilbert (12.9 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 3.8 apg, 1.3 spg), and Tarin Smith (8.7 ppg, 2.8 rpg, 2.4 apg, 1.0 spg). UConn will be without Jalen Adams who is out until mid-march with a knee injury and currently have Alterique Gilbert, who had missed his last 5 games, listed as questionable.
Defensively, UConn is allowing their opponents to average 71.3 ppg on 44.0% shooting from the field. The Huskies have a rebound margin of 5.4 and a turnover margin of 1.3.
The SMU Mustangs lost their 5th consecutive game and dropped to 12-12 (4-8 AAC) on the season after being defeated by the Temple Owls, 82-74, this past Wednesday. SMU gave Temple all they could handle as the Mustangs tied the game at 62-all with just 4:40 left in regulation, however, the defense struggled down the stretch and couldn’t fight back after an 8-0 Owls run gave Temple a 76-67 lead with just 1:16 left in regulation. SMU shot just 26.1% from beyond the arc and forced just 5 Temple turnovers in the loss. Leading the way for the Mustangs was Jahmal McMurray who had 22 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists.
On the season, SMU is averaging 73.8 ppg on 44.2% shooting from the field. The Mustangs are averaging 8.5 three-pointers per game on 34.1% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, SMU has been led by Jahmal McMurray (17.7 ppg, 2.2 rpg, 2.5 apg), Jimmy Whitt Jr. (12.8 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 4.3 apg, 1.5 spg), Ethan Chargois (12.5 ppg, 6.7 rpg, 2.0 apg), and Isiaha Mike (12.3 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 1.9 apg).
Defensively, SMU is allowing their opponents to average 69.5 ppg on 43.9% shooting from the field. The Mustangs have a rebound margin of 4.5 and a turnover margin of 1.5.
The Huskies are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 Thursday games and 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games vs. AAC opponents. The Mustangs are 6-19-1 ATS in their last 26 games vs. a team with a winning straight up record and 0-4 ATS in their last 4 home games.
UConn has lost 4 of their last 5 games and come into this game ranked 85th in scoring offense, 118th in FG%, and T-175th in scoring defense.
SMU has lost 7 of their last 8 games and currently rank 157th in scoring offense, 133rd in scoring defense, and 52nd in rebound margin.
UConn has been solid ATS as of late as they’ve been getting solid points with the injuries to Jalen Adams & Alterique Gilbert, however, the Huskies have struggled on the road this season as they are just 0-6 in ACC road games this season. SMU has yet to pick up a win in the month of February, however, they have been competitive against some of the AAC’s best during their 5-game losing streak and has lost by just an average of just 4.4 ppg during their losing streak. SMU had no trouble defeating UConn on the road earlier this season and a 76-64 victory and as I think the Mustangs defense will be able to give UConn some trouble, I’m taking SMU to snap their losing streak and cover this mid-range home spread. Good Luck!
