The Line: Southern Methodist Mustangs +1.5 -- Over/Under: 143.5
The TCU Horned Frogs and the SMU Mustangs meet in college basketball action from Moody Coliseum on Wednesday night.
The TCU Horned Frogs will look to build on back-to-back wins and a 5-1 start to the year after an 89-62 win over Central Michigan in their last outing. Desmond Bane led TCU with 24 points on 8 of 11 shooting with 4 threes, 9 rebounds and 3 blocks while Kouat Noi added 16 points. Jaylen Fisher chipped in 12 points on 5 of 13 shooting with 4 threes while Alex Robinson added 11 points and 12 assists for the double-double to round out the scoring in double figures for TCU in the win. JD Miller added 6 points and a team-high 12 rebounds while Kendric Davis added 6 assists as well in the winning effort. Bane leads TCU in scoring with 16.3 points per game and Robinson leads the Horned Frogs in assists with 9.5 assists per game while Kevin Samuel is TCU’s top rebounder with 7.2 rebounds per game this season. As a team, TCU is averaging 77 points per game on 51.6% shooting from the field, 36.4% from the 3-point line and 63.5% from the foul line this season.
The SMU Mustangs will look to build on their current 4-game winning streak which has SMU sitting at 6-3 on the year after a 79-67 win over Oral Roberts in their last outing. Ethan Chargois led SMU with 17 points on 6 of 10 shooting with a team-high 9 rebounds while Jahmal McMurray came right behind with 16 points. Isiaha Mike added 14 points and Jimmy Whitt Jr. chipped in 11 points to round out the scoring in double-digits for SMU in the win. Nat Dixon chipped in 7 points and a team-high 5 assists while Feron Hunt added 7 rebounds of his own in the victory. McMurray leads SMU in scoring with 18.4 points per game while Chargois leads the Mustangs on the glass with 7 rebounds and Whitt Jr. leads SMU in assists with 4.2 assists per game this season. As a team, SMU is scoring 76.9 points per game on 47.5% shooting from the field, 37.5% from behind the 3-point line and 69% from the foul line this season.
TCU is 2-6-1 ATS in their last 9 games overall and 2-7 ATS in their last 9 non-conference games while the over is 4-1 in their last 5 Wednesday games. SMU is 3-7 ATS in their last 10 home games and 6-19-1 ATS in their last 26 games against a team with a winning record while the over is 8-0 in their last 8 games overall. TCU is 15-4 ATS in the last 19 meetings between these two teams.
At first, I was a bit surprised to see TCU as a road favorite, especially in what’s their first true road game of the season. However, the Horned Frogs have owned this matchup ATS over the years, and while SMU is a solid team at home, the Mustangs are still allowing teams to shoot over 45% from the field, which won’t fly against a TCU squad that owns the 7th-best field goal percentage in the country, hitting shots at a 51.6% clip this season. The Horned Frogs are the better team defensively as well, so I’ll lay the points with TCU to pick up the road win in this one.
