The Mississippi State Bulldogs and the South Carolina Gamecocks meet in SEC conference college basketball action from Colonial Life Arena on Tuesday night.
The Mississippi State Bulldogs will look to build on their current 9-game winning streak after a 103-81 beatdown of BYU in their last outing. Aric Holman led the Bulldogs with 28 points on 11 of 18 shooting with 3 threes and 8 rebounds while Quinndary Weatherspoon came right behind with 27 points on 9 of 13 shooting with a pair of threes and a 7 of 7 mark from the foul line. Tyson Carter added 16 points and 4 steals while Nick Weatherspoon and Reggie Perry each had 11 points to round out the scoring in double figures for Mississippi State in the win, with Perry adding a team-high 8 rebounds. Lamar Peters was held scoreless but dished out a team-high 6 assists and pulled off 3 steals in the winning effort. Quinndary Weatherspoon leads Mississippi State in scoring with 17.2 points per game while Holman leads the Bulldogs on the glass with 8.6 rebounds per game and Peters leads Mississippi State in assists with 6.2 assists per game this season. As a team, Mississippi State is averaging 80.2 points per game on 48.2% shooting from the field, 38.2% from behind the arc and 76% from the foul line this season.
The South Carolina Gamecocks will look to build on back-to-back wins after defeating Florida as a 12-point underdog in their last outing by a final score of 71-69. Hassani Gravett led the Gamecocks with 22 points on 7 of 11 shooting with 4 threes, 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals while Chris Silva added 18 points in 19 minutes on the floor with 3 blocks as the only other South Carolina player to score in double figures in the win. Maik Kotsar added 4 points with a team-high 7 rebounds while Tre Campbell added 6 points and a team-high 4 assists. A.J. Lawson was also held to 6 points but still leads South Carolina with an average of 13.2 points and 3.2 assists while Silva leads the Gamecocks in rebounding with 6.7 rebounds per game this season. As a team, South Carolina is averaging 73.8 points per game on 42.3% shooting from the field, 31.3% from behind the arc and 71.3% from the foul line this season.
Mississippi State is 8-2 ATS in their last 10 road games and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall while the over is 4-1 in their last 5 games against a team with a losing record. South Carolina is 0-8 ATS in their last 8 home games and 3-10-1 ATS in their last 14 games overall while the over is 4-0 in their last 4 games against a team with a winning record. South Carolina is 4-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings between these two teams and 9-4 ATS in the last 13 meetings between these two teams in South Carolina.
Taking a home dog like South Carolina is tempting, especially after a win like the Gamecocks had against Florida. However, it only holds weight when you actually have success at home, which isn’t something we can say for South Carolina, who are 0-7 ATS at home this season. I’ve said before and I’ll say it again, Mississippi State is looking like a legitimate dark horse in the SEC this season, and I think they are simply the better team here so I’ll lay the points with Mississippi State in a game that I see the Bulldogs winning by double digits.
