The Omaha Mavericks will travel to the Sanford Coyote Sports Center to take on the South Dakota Coyotes this Thursday night in College Basketball action.
The Omaha Mavericks improved to 13-9 (7-2 Summit) on the season after defeating the North Dakota Fighting Hawks, 90-72, this past Sunday. Omaha has no trouble putting points up on the board against the North Dakota defense and was able to pull away in the 2nd half after taking an 81-67 lead with 4:28 left in regulation. Omaha shot 56.5% from the field and won the turnover battle by a 16-6 margin in the victory. Leading the way for the Mavericks was Zach Jackson who had 22 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals.
On the season, Omaha is averaging 79.6 ppg on 48.1% shooting from the field. The Mavericks are averaging 9.1 three-pointers per game on 39.0% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Omaha has been led by Zach Jackson (18.0 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 1.7 apg), JT Gibson (14.4 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 2.1 apg, 1.4 spg), Mitchell Hann (12.1 ppg, 6.3 rpg, 1.6 apg), and Matt Pile (10.4 ppg, 7.3 rpg, 1.3 apg).
Defensively, Omaha is allowing their opponents to average 78.0 ppg on 47.6% shooting from the field. The Mavericks have a rebound margin of -2.8 and a turnover margin of 3.0.
The South Dakota Coyotes lost their 2nd straight game and dropped to 9-13 (3-6 Summit) on the season after being defeated by the Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons, 102-71, on January 30th. South Dakota had no answers on the defensive end for the Mastodons offense and couldn’t fight back after entering halftime trailing by a 55-33 margin. South Dakota allowed Purdue Fort Wayne to shoot 52.2% from the field and 48.1% from beyond the arc while the Coyotes shot just 37.1% from the field. Leading the way for the Coyotes was Stanley Umude who had 32 points, 6 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 block, and 3 steals.
On the season, South Dakota is averaging 67.3 ppg on 43.1% shooting from the field. The Coyotes are averaging 6.6 three-pointers per game on 31.5% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, South Dakota has been led by Stanley Umude (14.0 ppg, 4.9 rpg, 1.3 apg), Triston Simpson (13.0 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 3.2 apg, 1.4 spg), Trey Burch-Manning (12.1 ppg, 6.3 rpg, 1.4 apg, 1.5 spg), and Tyler Peterson (11.0 ppg, 5.7 rpg, 2.3 apg).
Defensively, South Dakota is allowing their opponents to average 68.8 ppg on 44.2% shooting from the field. The Coyotes have a rebound margin of -2.5 and a turnover margin of 1.5.
The Mavericks are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games overall and 5-1 ATS in their last 6 road games. The Coyotes are 7-2-1 ATS in their last 10 Thursday games, however, are just 2-8 ATS in their last 10 games vs. Summit League opponents.
Omaha has won 6 of their last 7 games and although their defense can give up points as they rank just 315th in scoring defense, the Mavericks certainly know how to put points up on the board as they currently rank 44th in scoring offense, 34th in FG%, and 18th in 3P-FG%.
South Dakota has lost 4 of their last 5 games and has struggled on both ends of the court this season as they rank just 307th in scoring offense, 248th in FG%, and 216th in defensive FG%.
South Dakota plays much better at home and should have some offensive success against the Mavericks defense, however, Omaha is the far more talented team in this one and has already defeated South Dakota by a 75-68 margin earlier this season. Omaha has one of the more explosive offenses in the Summit this season and as they’ve won their 3 of their last 4 road games, I think Omaha and the point is the play here. Good Luck.
