The Temple Owls and the USF Bulls meet in AAC college basketball action from the USF Sun Dome on Saturday evening.
The Temple Owls will look to find some consistency after splitting their last 6 games following an 82-74 win over SMU last time out. Shizz Alston Jr. led the Owls with 28 points on 10 of 19 shooting with 3 threes and 5 assists while Nate Pierre-Louis added 16 points and 9 rebounds and Quinton Rose chipped in 15 points and 3 steals to round out the trio of double-digit scorers for Temple in the win. J.P. Moorman II and Ernest Aflakpui each had 6 points with Aflakpui adding a team-high 10 rebounds while Moorman II had 9 rebounds and a team-high 7 assists as well in the win. Alston Jr. leads Temple with an average of 18.5 points and 5 assists per game while Aflakpui leads the Owls in rebounding with 7.1 rebounds per game this season. As a team, Temple is averaging 74.8 points per game on 43.6% shooting from the floor, 33.3% from behind the arc and 73.6% from the foul line this season.
The USF Bulls will look to rebound after having their 5-game winning streak snapped thanks to a 78-65 loss to UCF in their last outing. David Collins led the Bulls with 20 points on 5 of 8 shooting with a 9 of 12 mark from the foul line while Justin Brown added 12 points with 3 threes and Laquincy Rideau chipped in 10 points with 5 rebounds, a team-high 5 assists and 5 steals to finish off the trio of double-digit scorers for USF in the loss. Alexis Yetna added a team-high 12 rebounds as well in the losing effort for the Bulls. Collins leads South Florida in scoring with 15.4 points per game while Yetna leads the Bulls in rebounding with 9.9 boards per game and Rideau leads USF in assists with 5.8 assists per game this season. As a team, USF is averaging 72.9 points per game on 43.5% shooting from the field, 34.3% from behind the arc and 63.6% from the foul line this season.
Temple is 6-1-1 ATS in their last 8 road games against a team with a winning home record and 3-7-1 ATS in their last 11 games against a team with a winning percentage above .600 while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 games overall. South Florida is 13-4 ATS in their last 17 games overall and 14-3 ATS in their last 17 games against a team with a winning record while the over is 6-1 in their last 7 games against a team with a winning percentage above .600. Temple is 4-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings between these two teams in South Florida.
South Florida getting a free point at home is definitely tempting, but frankly, I didn’t like how the Bulls looked against UCF and I got burned in that one as USF fell behind early and never recovered. Temple doesn’t have a 7’6” big man like Tacko Fall in the middle to protect the rim, but the Owls are well coached and have a reputation for going on the road and hanging around in some of the tougher environments in the country. I think the fact that Temple is favored here also goes to speak to how well the Owls have played at the Sun Dome, so I’ll lay the point with Temple in this one as I need to see a bounce back from USF before instilling my faith in the Bulls again.
