Opening day college basketball pits the SIU Edwardsville Cougars against the Pacific Tigers.
The Pacific Tigers improved to 14-18 a season ago but were only 6th in a top heavy West Coast. Pacific does have to control the scoreboard the the team outscored 72.4-71.2 with little three point success.
The Tigers lose Miles Reynolds and his 13.3 and Jack Williams with 8.5 points and 5.9 boards but there are several pieces of the puzzle coming back. Guard Roberto Gallinat averaged a team high 14.6 points and North Dakota State transfer Khy Kabellis gives Pacific a productive duo in the backcourt. The Tigers frontcourt of Jahill Tripp (10.9 ppg-7.8 rpg) and Anthony Townes (7.9 ppg-4.1 rpg) round out a veteran lineup.
The SIU Edwardsville Cougars were 11th in the 12 team Ohio Valley at 9-21. SIU Edwardsville scored 69.7 points on 41.7% shooting while allowing 78.7 points on 47.6%.
The Cougars were offensively challenged a season ago and not any better with leading scorer Jalen Henry taking 16.2 points and 7.3 rebounds to graduation while fellow forward Keenan Simmons leaves a void of 6.4 points and 5.2 boards.
Guard Daniel Kinchen is the top scorer back for SIUE with 11.4 points with fellow guards Christian Ellis, David McFarland and Justin Benton combining for almost 24 points. It might be tough predicting a lineup going forward with Cougars head coach Jon Harris tinkering with different combinations.
Over is 6-2 in Pacific last 8 Tuesday games and Pacific are 12-5-1 ATS in their last 18 games overall and over is 7-3 in Pacific last 10 non-conference games. SIUE are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 home games and SIUE are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games overall and SIUE are 1-9 ATS in their last 10 non-conference games.
Pacific might be on the rise although cracking the top four in the WCC isn’t going to happen. SIU-Edwardsville lost their best player and that hurts a team in need of production…
