Villanova Wildcats -1.5 -- Over/Under: 145.5
The Villanova Wildcats and the St. John’s Red Storm meet in Big East college basketball action from Madison Square Garden on Sunday afternoon.
The Villanova Wildcats will look to pick up some steam after an 85-67 win over Providence in their last time out. Eric Paschall led the Wildcats with 25 points on 10 of 13 shooting with 5 threes while Phil Booth added 22 points and Dhamir Cosby-Roundtree chipped in 12 points with a team-high 7 rebounds to round out the trio of double-digit scorers for Villanova in the win. Collin Gillespie added 7 points and a team-high 8 assists as well in the victory for the Wildcats. Booth leads Villanova with an average of 18.5 points and 3.9 assists while Cosby-Roundtree leads the Wildcats in rebounding with 6.5 rebounds per game this season. As a team, Villanova is averaging 76.2 points per game on 45.5% shooting from the field, 36.4% from behind the arc and 71.8% from the foul line this season.
The St. John’s Red Storm will look to find some consistency after alternating wins and losses in each of their last 6 games after a 77-73 overtime win over Butler last time out. Mustapha Heron led the Red Storm with 28 points on 8 of 15 shooting with a 10 of 12 mark from the foul line while Marvin Clark II added 18 points with 4 threes and Shamorie Ponds chipped in 14 points with a team-high 7 rebounds and 4 steals to round out the group of double-digit scorers for St. John’s in the winning effort. Justin Simon contributed 8 points and 7 rebounds of his own while LJ Figueroa had 7 points with 6 rebounds, a team-high 4 assists and 4 steals. Ponds leads St. John’s with an average of 20.5 points and 5.2 assists per game while Figueroa leads the Red Storm in rebounding with 6.5 rebounds per game this season. As a team, St. John’s is averaging 79.6 points per game on 46.4% shooting from the field, 37% from behind the 3-point line and 72.7% from the foul line this season.
Villanova is 43-18 ATS in their last 61 games overall and 8-1 ATS in their last 9 conference games while the under is 5-0 in their last 5 neutral site games. St. John’s is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 neutral site games and 1-3-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a win while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 games overall. Villanova is 1-4 ATS in the last 5 meetings between these two teams.
The Red Storm feel a certain level of comfort at Madison Square Garden, so it’s a little strange seeing St. John’s as a dog in this one. However, I think that just goes to speak to how well Villanova has been playing during conference play, with their lone loss coming to an extremely talented Marquette side. St. John’s has had consistency issues as of late, and those aren’t the kinds of things that you want to have to deal with when you have Villanova to focus on. The Wildcats aren’t afraid of the big stage and I think Villanova’s experience shines through here so I’ll lay the bucket with the Wildcats in this spot.
