The Xavier Musketeers and the St. John’s Red Storm meet in Big East college basketball action from the Carnesecca Arena on Thursday night.

The Xavier Musketeers will look to build on their current 4-game winning streak after a 66-54 win over Villanova in their last outing. Naji Marshall led the Musketeers with 17 points on 6 of 12 shooting with 7 rebounds and a team-high 4 assists while Paul Scruggs added 14 points and 6 rebounds and Quentin Goodin chipped in 11 points with a team-high 4 assists. Zach Hankins chipped in 10 points with a pair of blocks to round out the group of double-digit scorers for Xavier in the win. Tyrique Jones added 6 points with a team-high 8 rebounds as well in the victory. Marshall leads Xavier in scoring with 14.4 points per game while Jones leads the Musketeers in rebounding with 7.7 rebounds per game and Goodin leads Xavier in assists with 4.7 assists per game this season. As a team, Xavier is averaging is 71.8 points per game on 46.8% shooting from the field, 33.7% from behind the arc and 68.6% from the foul line this season.

The St. John’s Red Storm will look to build on a 78-70 win over Seton Hall in their last outing. Shamorie Ponds led the Red Storm with 27 points on 10 of 18 shooting with a team-high 5 assists and 4 steals while Marvin Clark chipped in 18 points on 6 of 10 shooting with 4 threes, a team-high 6 rebounds and 3 steals. Justin Simon had 10 points to round out the trio of double-digit scorers for St. John’s in the win while Sedee Keita had 6 points and 4 blocks and Marcellus Earlington and Greg Williams Jr. each had 3 blocks. Ponds leads St. John’s with an average of 19.7 points and 5.1 assists per game while LJ Figueroa leads the Red Storm in rebounding with 6.4 rebounds per game this season. As a team, St. John’s is averaging 78.5 points per game on 45.6% shooting from the field, 36.5% from behind the 3-point line and 72.7% from the foul line this season.

Xavier is 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games overall and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a win while the under is 6-1 in their last 7 conference games. St. John’s is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games following a win and 7-3 ATS in their last 10 home games while the under is 7-1 in their last 8 games overall. The under is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings between these two teams at St. John’s.

St. John’s has been a tough team to beat at home this season, going 11-3 SU, but the fact is that we are getting points with the hotter team in much better form with Xavier here. The Musketeers haven’t been that great on the road, but Xavier is coming off of that win over Villanova and have picked up their play lately with the conference tournament around the corner. St. John’s is the better team here, but I just think that Xavier will come to play in this one so I’ll take the Musketeers and the points in this one.

Xavier +5
