The Line: Arizona State Sun Devils -1 -- Over/Under:
The Arizona State Sun Devils and Syracuse Orange meet Wednesday in the college basketball First Four at the UD Arena.
The Arizona State Sun Devils enter this tournament losing five of their last six games, looking very different than how they started the season. The Arizona State Sun Devils are averaging 83.5 points on 46.4 percent shooting and allowing 75.3 points on 43.9 percent shooting. Tra Holder is averaging 18.4 points and 3.4 assists while Shannon Evans II is averaging 16.6 points and 3.2 rebounds. Romello White is the third double-digit scorer and Kodi Justice is grabbing 2.7 rebounds. The Arizona State Sun Devils are shooting 36.4 percent from beyond the arc and 73.8 percent from the free throw line. The Arizona State Sun Devils are allowing 34.2 percent shooting from deep and are grabbing 35.3 rebounds per game. The Arizona State Sun Devils have won three of their last four neutral site games.
The Syracuse Orange enter this tournament losing five of their last eight games, having many question if they even belong in the big dance. The Syracuse Orange are averaging 67.5 points on 41.8 percent shooting and allowing 64.5 points on 39.6 percent shooting. Tyus Battle is averaging 19.8 points and 3.1 rebounds while Frank Howard is averaging 15 points and five assists. Oshae Brissett is the third double-digit scorer and Paschal Chukwu is grabbing 6.8 rebounds. The Syracuse Orange are shooting 32.1 percent from beyond the arc and 74 percent from the free throw line. The Syracuse Orange are allowing 32.8 percent shooting from deep and are grabbing 37.4 rebounds per game. The Syracuse Orange have split their last four neutral site games.
The Orange are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 NCAA Tournament games, 2-6 ATS in their last 8 neutral site games and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 Wednesday games. The Sun Devils are 10-1 ATS in their last 11 non-conference games, 10-26 ATS in their last 36 neutral site games and 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games overall. The over is 17-8-1 in Sun Devils last 26 non-conference games and the under is 5-2 in Orange last 7 neutral site games.
The Arizona State Sun Devils aren't the same team as they were earlier in the season, as the lack of defense has caught up to them and the confidence can't be great right now. Remember, ASU was a team some had possibly being a Final Four contender at one point. On the flipside, the Syracuse Orange are lucky to even be in the tournament. Wait, isn't that a yearly thing with the Orange? Either way, it's hard to get a good feel for either side. What I do know is that Arizona State has the shooters to expose this Syracuse zone defense, and Holder will be the best player on the court. Tournament time can be dominated by guard play. I'll take Arizona State in this toss-up contest.
