The Eastern Washington Eagles and the Syracuse Orange meet in college basketball action to kick off their respective 2018-19 regular season schedules from the Carrier Dome.
The Eastern Washington Eagles come into this matchup looking to build on a solid 2017-18 campaign that saw the Eagles finish with a 20-15 overall record including a road win over Stanford and a narrow overtime loss to Wyoming before going 13-5 in Big Sky conference play, finishing 3rd and taking down Portland State and Southern Utah before falling to Montana in the conference championship game. The biggest challenge for EWU will be replacing Bogdan Bliznyuk, who graduated from the program after accounting for 28.2% of the team’s scoring last season. The good news is that the Eagles also have their next 5 top scorers returning, including Mason Peatling who averaged 7.7 points and 5.6 rebounds in his sophomore season last year. As a team, Eastern Washington averaged 74.8 points per game on 46.4% shooting from the field last season, 37.4% from behind the arc and 76.4% from the foul line.
The Syracuse Orange come into the 2018-19 season looking to build on a strong 2017-18 season of their own, finishing 23-14 overall with an 8-10 record in ACC play to finish 10th in the conference, bowing out in the 2nd round of the ACC tournament to North Carolina. The Orange were good enough however to earn a spot in the NCAA tournament, taking down Arizona State in the first four and upsetting TCU and Michigan State in the next two rounds before falling to fellow ACC squad Duke in the sweet sixteen. Not much has changed from last year’s group, as the main departures were Geno Thorpe and Matthew Moyer who combined for 9.2 points and 4.2 rebounds last season. Tyus Battle is back after leading the Orange with 19.2 points per game last season, while Oshae Brissett returns after leading ‘Cuse with 8.8 rebounds and Frank Howard is back after averaging a Orange-high 4.7 assists per game last season. As a team, Syracuse averaged 66.6 points per game on 41.7% shooting from the field, 31.8% from behind the arc and 73.6% from the foul line last season.
Eastern Washington is 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games overall while the over is 4-1 in their last 5 games overall and 5-2 in their last 7 non-conference games. Syracuse is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 home games and 4-0 ATS in their last 4 non-conference games while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 games overall.
The Orange run with a short lineup, using only about 7 or 8 guys in a game, but at least we know what we are getting from Syracuse. Eastern Washington had a solid year last season, but I need to see how they perform without Bliznyuk as he was the majority of the offense from last year’s team. I think this just comes down to me trusting Syracuse more, so I’ll lay the points with the Orange in this spot.
