Virginia Cavaliers -7 -- O/U: 123.5
The Virginia Cavaliers and the Syracuse Orange meet in ACC college basketball action from the Carrier Dome on Monday night.
The Virginia Cavaliers will look to stay hot after making it 6 wins in a row after a 73-49 win over Pitt last time out. Kyle Guy led the Cavaliers with 17 points on 6 of 9 shooting with 5 threes while Ty Jerome added 13 points and De’Andre Hunter chipped in 12 points with a team-high 5 assists to round out the trio of double-digit scorers for Virginia in the win. Kihei Clark added 6 points with 4 assists and a pair of steals while Jay Huff had a team-high 6 rebounds and 3 steals in the winning effort. Hunter leads Virginia in scoring with 15.2 points per game while Jerome leads the Cavaliers in assists with 5 helpers per game and Braxton Key leads Virginia in rebounding with 5.7 rebounds per game this season. As a team, Virginia is averaging 71.9 points per game on 47.9% shooting from the field, 40.1% from behind the arc and 75.5% from the foul line this season. The Cavaliers also remain one of the elite defensive teams in the country, sitting at the top in terms of scoring defense and 3-point percentage against, allowing 54.1 points and 26.7% shooting per game respectively while also ranking 4th in field goal percentage against, allowing just 37.4% shooting from the field this season.
The Syracuse Orange will hope to find some consistency after splitting their last 10 games following a 79-54 win over Wake Forest in their last outing. Tyus Battle led the Orange with 21 points on 9 of 13 shooting with 5 steals while Elijah Hughes added 18 points with a team-high 7 rebounds and a pair of steals as the only other Syracuse player to score in double figures in the winning effort. Oshae Brissett added 9 points with 4 assists and a pair of steals while Frank Howard had 6 points to match his team-high 6 assists. Battle leads Syracuse in scoring with 17.7 points per game while Brissett leads the Orange in rebounding with 7.6 rebounds per game and Howard leads the Orange in assists with 3.1 assists per game this season. As a team, Syracuse is averaging 70.6 points per game on 42.7% shooting from the field, 32.3% from behind the arc and 68.1% from the foul line this season.
Virginia is 41-16-1 ATS in their last 58 games overall and 51-25-1 ATS in their last 77 road games while the over is 3-1-1 in their last 5 games against a team with a winning record. Syracuse is 7-3 ATS in their last 10 home games and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games following a win while the under is 5-1 in their last 6 games overall. Virginia is 1-4 ATS in the last 5 meetings between these two teams.
The Cavaliers haven’t had much luck in this matchup ATS, and most of the recent meetings have been somewhat close, so the points with Syracuse as a home dog are worth a look. However, Virginia is starting to roll again, winning 6 straight and the last 3 haven’t been all that close. Granted, two of those wins came against Pitt and Georgia Tech, two of the lower teams in the ACC standings, but there’s also a 12-point win over Louisville in there. Virginia has allowed 58 points or less in each of their last 5 games, and while Syracuse has been good defensively with their zone, the Orange have been giving up a lot of points for the most part lately, so I’ll lay the points with Virginia to pick up a win and cover here.
