The SIU-Edwardsville Cougars will travel to the Hooper Eblen Center to take on the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles this Thursday night in College Basketball action.
The SIU-Edwardsville Cougars had their 3-game winning steak snapped and dropped to 5-9 (1-1 OVC) on the season after being defeated by the Eastern Illinois Panthers, 84-81 in OT, this past Saturday. SIU-Edwardsville was able to force OT after two Josiah Wallace FT’s with :57 seconds left in regulation tied the game at 66-all, however, couldn’t fight back after Eastern Illinois took a 77-70 lead with 3:16 left in regulation. SIU-Edwardsville shot 39.2% from the field & 19.0% from beyond the arc in the loss. Leading the way for the Cougars was Brandon Jackson who had 26 points, 9 rebounds, 3 blocks, and a steal.
On the season, SIU-Edwardsville is averaging 75.9 ppg on 43.4% shooting from the field. The Cougars are averaging 6.1 three-pointers per game on 28.4% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, SIU-Edwardsville has been led by David McFarland (14.5 ppg, 3.9 rpg, 1.4 apg, 1.8 spg), Brandon Jackson (13.6 ppg, 6.4 rpg), Tyresse Williford (13.6 ppg, 4.1 rpg, 4.1 apg, 1.0 spg), and Cameron Williams (10.9 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 1.2 apg, 1.5 spg).
Defensively, SIU-Edwardsville is allowing 80.4 ppg on 50.0% shooting from the field. The Cougars have a rebound margin of -0.9 and a turnover margin of 2.9.
The Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles improved to 5-10 (1-1 OVC) on the season after being defeated by the Belmont Bruins, 79-67, this past Saturday. Tennessee Tech struggled from beyond the arc and couldn’t fight back after Belmont took a 61-45 lead midway through the 2nd half. Tennessee Tech shot 17.6% from beyond the arc and was outrebounded by the Bruins by a 36-31 margin in the loss. Leading the way for the Golden Eagles was Malik Martin who had 17 points & 6 rebounds.
On the season, Tennessee Tech is averaging 71.3 ppg on 43.7% shooting from the field. The Golden Eagles are averaging 6.3 three-pointers per game on 32.2% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Tennessee Tech has been led by Jr. Clay (12.5 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 3.5 apg, 1.5 spg), Micaiah Henry (11.5 ppg, 5.1 rpg, 1.7 bpg), Malik Martin (11.2 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 1.0 apg, 1.0 spg), and Hunter Vick (10.5 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 2.8 apg, 1.2 spg).
Defensively, Tennessee Tech is allowing their opponents to average 80.0 ppg on 45.7% shooting from the field. The Golden Eagles have a rebound margin of -3.9 and a turnover margin of -0.6.
The Cougars are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 Thursday games and 9-3 ATS in their last 12 games vs. OVC opponents. The Golden Eagles are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 Thursday games and 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games vs. OVC opponents.
SIU-Edwardsville had a tough lost against Eastern Illinois, however, has played some of their best basketball of the season as of late which includes a solid 82-72 victory over a solid Northern Colorado team. SIU-Edwardsville has a decent offense which ranks 137th in scoring offense, however, their defense has struggled as they rank just 334th in scoring defense & 349th in defensive FG%. Tennessee Tech has won 4 of their last 7 games and although they have done a solid job creating turnovers, the Golden Eagles have struggled on both side of the ball as they rank just 254th in scoring offense & 326th in scoring defense.
I think SIU-Edwardsville is the better team here, however, the Cougars have really struggled away from home as they are 0-5 on the road this season. Tennessee Tech has won the last 4 games in this match-up and although I’m concerned about their defense, I think they do enough at home to cover this small spread.
