UT Arlington Mavericks -5.5 -- Over/Under: 148
The Appalachian State Mountaineers will travel to College Park Center to take on the UT Arlington Mavericks this Saturday afternoon in College Basketball action.
The Appalachian State Mountaineers had their 3-game winning streak snapped and dropped to 8-15 (3-7 Sun Belt) on the season after being defeated by the Texas State Bobcats, 74-71, this past Thursday. In a tight back and forth game, Appalachian State struggled defensively down the stretch and couldn’t fight back after Texas State took a 68-62 lead with 4:04 left in regulation. Appalachian State allowed Texas State to shoot 55.4% from the field and committed 16 turnovers in the loss. Leading the way for the Mountaineers was Ronshad Shabazz who had 23 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and a steal.
On the season, Appalachian State is averaging 81.7 ppg on 45.8% shooting from the field. The Mountaineers are averaging 9.4 three-pointers per game on 36.6% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Appalachian State has been led by Ronshad Shabazz (18.3 ppg, 2.9 rpg, 2.6 apg), Justin Forrest (16.3 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 2.6 apg, 1.2 spg), Isaac Johnson (10.1 ppg, 8.7 rpg, 2.1 apg), and Tyrell Johnson (9.0 ppg, 4.3 rpg).
Defensively, Appalachian State is allowing their opponents to average 79.3 ppg on 46.2% shooting from the field. The Mountaineers have a rebound margin of -3.1 and a turnover margin of 1.2.
The UT Arlington Mavericks won their 2nd straight game and improved to 11-12 (7-3 Sun Belt) on the season after defeating the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers, 74-54, this past Thursday. UT Arlington was outstanding on the defensive end against the Chanticleers and had no trouble pulling away for the victory in the 2nd half after taking a 33-21 lead. UT Arlington held Coastal Carolina to just 22.6% shooting from the field and 19.0% from beyond the arc. Leading the way for the Mavericks was Andres Ibarguen who had a double-double with 12 points, 15 rebounds, 1 assist, and a block.
On the season, UT Arlington is averaging 67.3 ppg on 39.6% shooting from the field. The Mavericks are averaging 6.4 three-pointers per game on 27.4% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, UT Arlington has been led by Edric Dennis (15.1 ppg, 4.8 rpg, 2.1 apg), Brian Warren (14.2 ppg, 2.5 rpg, 3.4 apg, 1.0 spg), David Azore (8.6 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 1.6 apg), and Andres Ibarguen (7.1 ppg, 7.2 rpg).
Defensively, UT Arlington is allowing their opponents to average 70.6 ppg on 43.8% shooting from the field. The Mavericks have a rebound margin of 1.9 and a turnover margin of -1.3.
The Mountaineers are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 road games and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall. The Mavericks are 6-0 ATS in their las 6 games following a straight up win and 8-0 ATS in their last 8 games overall.
Appalachian State has won 3 of their last 5 games and although heir offense is dangerous as the Mountaineers rank 29th in scoring offense, Appalachian State has had trouble picking up wins behind a defense that ranks 332nd in scoring defense & 300th in defensive FG%.
UT Arlington has won 7 of their last 8 games and although their offense has struggled to put points up on the board on the season, ranking just T-304th in scoring offense, the Mavericks defense has been solid as they rank 160th in scoring defense & 113th in steals per game.
Appalachian State has played better as of late however, this is still the same team that has really struggled defensively and has already lost to the Mavericks by an 82-72 margin at home this season. UT Arlington has been impressive in what most thought would be a tough rebuilding year and as UT Arlington recently picked up big road wins at Georgia State & Texas State, I think the Mavericks will be able to do enough at home to cover this spread. Good Luck!
