The Central Arkansas Bears and Texas A&M-CC Islanders will square off at the Leonard E. Merrell Center this Wednesday night in the 1st round of the Southland Men’s Tournament.

The Central Arkansas Bears finished their regular season with an overall record of 13-18 and earned the 7-seed in the Southland Men’s Tournament after finishing conference play with an 8-10 record. Central Arkansas struggled a bit during the middle of conference play as they at one point had a 7-game losing streak, however, the Bears come into game with some solid momentum as they’ve won 3 of their last 4 games which includes a 91-87 victory on the road agianst the top-seed Sam Houston State Bearkats. Central Arkansas was led by their offense that ranked 182nd in scoring offense & 111th in three-pointers made per game, however, the Bears defense struggled this season and currently rank just 289th in scoring defense.

On the season, Central Arkansas is averaging 72.4 ppg on 42.7% shooting from the field. The Bears are averaging 8.4 three-pointers per game on 35.3% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Central Arkansas has been led by Cameron Delaney (13.4 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 1.9 apg), Kai Mitchell (12.0 ppg, 7.3 rpg, 1.1 apg, 1.0 spg), Josh Delaney (10.3 ppg, 2.5 rpg, 4.8 apg), and Marcus Harris (8.3 ppg, 2.1 rpg, 2.3 apg).

Defensively, Central Arkansas is allowing their opponents to average 76.3 ppg on 44.0% shooting from the field. The Bears have a rebound margin of -2.6 and a turnover margin of -1.4.

The Texas A&M-CC Islanders finished their regular season with an overall record of 14-17 and earned the 6-seed in the Southland Men’s Tournament after finishing conference play with an 9-9 record. Texas A&M-CC had an up and down season which featured some difficult games against Tennessee & Oklahoma State, however, never suffered a losing streak longer than 3 games and come into postseason play riding a 3-game winning streak. Texas A&M-CC has been led by their defense that ranks 49th in scoring defense & T-40th in defensive FG%, however, the Islanders had trouble scoring the basketball as they currently rank just 306th in scoring offense.

On the season Texas A&M-CC is averaging 66.9 ppg on 43.3% shooting from the field. The Islanders are averaging 6.3 three-pointers per game on 32.9% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Texas A&M-CC has been led by Kareem South (14.1 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 2.0 apg, 1.3 spg), Jashawn Talton (8.9 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 1.2 apg), Emmanuel Toney (7.9 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 3.4 apg, 1.2 spg), and Elijah Schmidt (6.2 ppg, 5.5 rpg).

Defensively, Texas A&M-CC is holding their opponents to an average of 66.2 ppg on 40.9% shooting from the field. The Islanders have a rebound margin of 3.8 and a turnover margin of -0.3.

The Bears are 3-8 ATS in their last 11 games overall and 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games vs. a team with a losing straight up record. The Islanders are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a straight up win, however, are just 3-10 ATS in their last 13 neutral site games.

Texas A&M-CC defeated Central Arkansas in their only match-up of the season as the Islanders won by a 87-75 margin at home in early January.

Texas A&M-CC has won 7 of their last 8 games against Central Arkansas, however, I was impressed by how the Bears finished their regular season as the offense put up 90+ points in 2 of their last 4 games. Texas A&M-CC is solid defensively and should have the advantage on the boards, however, I think the Islanders offense is going to have trouble keeping up with the Bears in this one and I think the play here is to take Central Arkansas and the points. Good Luck!

Pick:
Central Arkansas Bears +2.5
