The Western Michigan Broncos and the Toledo Rockets meet in college basketball MAC-tion from the Savage Arena on Tuesday night.
The Western Michigan Broncos will look to snap a 3-game losing streak after a 60-58 loss to Ball State in their last outing. Seth Dugan led the Broncos with 20 points along with 20 rebounds for the double-double while Michael Flowers added 11 points as the only other Western Michigan player to score in double figures in the losing effort. Dugan leads Western Michigan with an average of 16 points and 9.5 rebounds per game while Flowers leads the Broncos in assists with 3.3 assists per game. As a team, Western Michigan is averaging 70.6 points per game on 42.9% shooting from the field, 32.6% from behind the 3-point line and 69.1% from the foul line this season.
The Toledo Rockets will look to add to their current 3-game winning streak after an 80-68 win over Central Michigan in their last outing. Luke Knapke and Jaelan Sanford tied for the team-high with 19 points, with Knapke shooting 8 of 9 from the floor with a team-high 4 assists and 5 blocks while Sanford shot 8 of 13 with 3 threes. Marreon Jackson added 18 points on 7 of 13 shooting with 4 threes to round out the group of double-digit scorers for Toledo in the win. Willie Jackson chipped in 6 points with a team-high 8 rebounds while AJ Edu had 7 boards and 4 blocks. Sanford leads Toledo in scoring with 15.7 points per game while Marreon Jackson leads the Rockets in assists with 4.2 assists per game and Willie Jackson leads the Rockets in rebounding with 9.1 rebounds per game this season. As a team, Toledo is averaging 77.8 points per game on 45.4% shooting from the field, 37.2% from behind the arc and 77.4% from the foul line this season.
Western Michigan is 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games overall and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games against a team with a winning record while the over is 16-7 in their last 23 games following a loss. Toledo is 12-3-1 ATS in their last 16 games following a win and 5-1 ATS in their last 6 home games against a team with a losing road record while the under is 7-1 in their last 8 home games. Western Michigan is 5-13-1 ATS in the last 19 meetings between these two teams at Toledo.
I’ll concede that Toledo should be favored here, as the Rockets are the better team and are playing the better basketball as of late. However, the first meeting was only decided by 8 points, and each of Western Michigan’s last 3 losses have been decided by 5 points or less. Now granted, Eastern Michigan, Ball State and Northern Illinois aren’t on the same level as Toledo, but the Broncos are battling down the stretch, so I’ll take a shot with Western Michigan and the points here.
