Towson vs. UNC-Wilmington - 01/05/2019 NCAA BB Pick, Odds, and Prediction

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

The UNC-Wilmington Seahawks will travel to SECU Arena to take on the Towson Tigers this Saturday afternoon in College Basketball action.

The UNC-Wilmington Seahawks snapped a 6-game losing streak and improved to 5-10 (1-1 CAA) on the season after defeating the James Madison Dukes, 86-83 in double OT, this past Thursday. UNC-Wilmington was able to force the 2nd OT after a Jeantal Cylla tip-in with just :01 second left in the 1st OT, and got some clutch FT’s by Ty Gadsden down the stretch of the 2nd OT to help secure the victory. UNC-Wilmington shot 42.1% from the field and outrebounded James Madison by a 53-32 margin in the victory. Leading the way for the Seahawks was Devontae Cacok who had a double-double with 18 points, 19 rebounds, 2 assists, and a steal.

On the season, UNC-Wilmington is averaging 76.9 ppg on 45.1% shooting from the field. The Seahawks are averaging 8.4 three-pointers per game on 35.5% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, UNC-Wilmington has been led by Devontae Cacok (14.9 ppg, 11.7 rpg, 1.0 spg), Jeantal Cylla (13.9 ppg, 5.1 rpg), Jaylen Fornes (8.7 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 1.0 apg), and Kai Toews (7.7 ppg, 2.4 rpg, 7.6 apg).

Defensively, UNC-Wilmington is allowing their opponents to average 81.4 ppg on 46.6% shooting from the field. The Seahawks have a rebound margin of 5.1 and a turnover margin of -5.0.

The Towson Tigers lost their 2nd straight game and dropped to 5-10 (1-2 CAA) on the season after being defeated by the Charleston Cougars, 67-55, this past Thursday. Towson didn’t have any answers for the Grant Riller/Jarrell Brantley duo of the Cougars and couldn’t fight back after Charleston took a 46-31 lead mid-way through the 2nd half. Towson shot just 36.8% from the field and 26.1% from beyond the arc in the loss. Leading the way for the Tigers was Jordan McNeil who had 14 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist, and a steal.

On the season, Towson is averaging 66.7 ppg on 43.0% shooting from the field. The Tigers are averaging 5.6 three-pointers per game on 32.3% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Towson has been led by Brian Fobbs (15.8 ppg, 5.6 rpg, 1.2 apg), Tobias Howard (9.5 ppg, 1.8 rpg, 2.7 apg), Nakye Sanders (8.5 ppg, 5.1 rpg), and Jordan McNeil (7.3 ppg, 1.5 rpg, 1.0 apg).

Defensively, Towson is allowing their opponents to average 69.4 ppg on 42.8% shooting from the field. The Tigers have a rebound margin of 7.1 and a turnover margin of -3.4.

The Seahawks are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games vs. CAA opponents, however, just 2-5-1 ATS in their last 8 road games. The Tigers are 4-10 ATS in their last 14 games following a straight up loss and 7-19 ATS in their last 26 games overall.

UNC-Wilmington has a great frontcourt duo of Devontae Cacok & Jeantal Cylla which are a huge part of the Seahawks 119th ranked scoring offense, however, it’s going to be difficult for the Seahawks to pick up many victories this season as their defense currently ranks 334th in scoring defense, 304th in defensive FG%, and 344th in turnover margin. Towson is a solid defensive team as they rank 132nd in scoring defense & 32nd in rebound margin, however, they have only one player averaging double-digits on the offense end and currently rank 316th in scoring offense & 253rd in FG%.

UNC-Wilmington picked up a much-needed victory against the Dukes, however, I think it could be a struggle for the Seahawks agianst Towson, as the Tigers have the size and defense to give Cacok/Cylla some trouble. Towson’s offense can struggle, but they should be able to put up some points agianst a poor Seahawks defense and as the Tigers won by 18 at home agianst UNCW last season, I’m leaning on Towson to cover this small home spread.

Pick:
Towson Tigers -2
