The Idaho Vandals open the college basketball season on the road at the UC Irvine Anteaters.
The Idaho Vandals were 22-9 last season which was good for second in the Big Sky behind Montana. Idaho outscored opponents 75.2-68.8 with their defense ranked #86 in basketball.
The Vandals are reloading n 2018-19 with the majority of the team’s production gone. Nate Sherwood was 4th on the team at 9.5 points and was the top returning scorer but Idaho doesn’t know if he’ll play at all as he is battling psoriatic arthritis.
Guard Trevon Allen is the Vandals most experienced player returning after averaging 4.2 points over 31 games but this team is very young and inexperienced otherwise.
The UC Irvine Anteaters finished third in the Big West a year ago at just 18-17 overall. UC Irvine was far from an offensive powerhouse at 69 points but the team gave up only 67 points on 38.9% which was 4th in the game.
The good news for the Anteaters is virtually everyone returns which makes this team a top contender for the conference title. Evan Leonard topped UCI at 13.6 points with fellow guard Eyassu Worku adding 11.3 points and a team high 3.7 assists.
Tommy Rutherford gave the Anteaters another double digit scorer at 10.1 points and 5.7 boards while graduate transfer Robert Cartwright comes in from Stanford.
