UC Riverside -5.5; Total 125

Two teams off to great starts will look to continue their winning ways when the Longwood Lancers (4-2) travel to SRC Arena in Riverside to take on the UC Riverside Highlanders (4-2) on Tuesday. While both teams are 4-2, they are both just 3-2 against NCAA Division I competition and the loser will go to .500 against Division I opposition.

UC Riverside is on a two-game winning streak with blowout wins over Denver and NCAA Division III Redlands. The Highlanders were impressive to open the season with a 19-point win over Nebraska on the road as well as a win over Idaho, but back-to-back losses at Sacramento State and Pacific have hurt the overall record. However, when considering that the two opponents UCR lost to have a combined record of 9-3, the record seems even better. In addition, all but one of the Highlanders’ Division I opponents this season have a winning record except for Denver, which is 2-3.

Against the Pioneers, 7-foot-1 sophomore Callum McRae led all scorers with 18 points and he added nine rebounds and two blocked shots in the win. McRae scored his 18 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the field. Freshman Zyon Pullin added 15 points off the bench to go with six rebounds and junior George Willborn III added eight points and five rebounds in the win. UC Riverside held Denver to 33.3 percent shooting from the field and 16.7 percent shooting from 3-point range showing off a defense that ranks fifth in Division I allowing just 51.8 points per game.

On the year, McRae leads the Highlanders with 13.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game while junior Dominick Pickett adds 8.5 points per game on 47.4 percent shooting from 3-point range. Pullin is scoring just 7.0 points per game but has hit 53.8 percent of his 3-point shots.

Longwood opened up with a 22-point win over NCAA Division III Marymount (VA) before dropping an 11-point decision to George Mason, a team that is currently 6-1 and its only loss came against No. 6 Maryland. Three straight convincing wins over Maryland-Eastern Shore (85-55), St. Francis of Brooklyn (86-77), and NCAA Division III Randolph College (78-53), the Lancers lost 65-48 at Northern Illinois, a team that is 6-2 on the season. In fact, the Division I teams that Longwood lost to have a combined record of 12-3, while the Division I teams that Lancers beat combine for a 2-11 record, making Longwood a tough team to read.

In the loss to Northern Illinois, Longwood was held to 28.1 percent shooting from the field and 24.1 percent from 3-point range. Just one Lancer scored in double figures with junior Jordan Cintron scoring 15 points with eight rebounds and four steals in the win. Seniors Shabooty Phillips and Jaylon Wilson scored eight points apiece in the loss.

Wilson leads Longwood in scoring on the season with 10.2 points per game despite shooting just 44.4 percent from the field and 30.8 percent from long range. Sophomore Christian Wilson adds 10.0 points per game and Phillips scores 9.5 points per game.

Look for UC Riverside and its strong defense to pull away in this one. Both teams have played good competition, but the Highlanders have shown an ability to keep close with their defense while the Lancers were blown out against the better teams. In addition, Longwood is not just 0-2 as a road team this year, it is also 0-2 against the spread on the road this season, while UC Riverside is 3-0 at home this season. Take the Highlanders minus the points.
