The Memphis Tigers and the UConn Huskies meet in AAC college basketball action from the XL Center on Sunday afternoon.
The Memphis Tigers will try to leapfrog in the AAC standings, sitting at 6-5 in conference play after back-to-back losses following a 92-86 loss to Cincinnati last time out. Precious Achiuwa leads the Tigers with 15 points and 10.1 rebounds per game while Lester Quinones and D.J. Jeffries each have double-digit scoring averages for Memphis this season. Alex Lomax leads the Tigers in assists with 4.3 assists per game this season. As a team, Memphis is averaging 74.3 points on 45.7% shooting from the field, 34.3% from behind the arc and 67.6% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to rack up 65.3 points per game on 36.6% shooting from the field and 30.2% from behind the arc this season. Memphis is 4-3 straight up and 4-3 against the spread on the road this season.
The UConn Huskies will also try to climb some ranks in the AAC after a 79-75 loss to SMU last time out. Christian Vital leads UConn in scoring and rebounding with 14.2 points and 6.3 rebounds per game while James Bouknight is UConn’s only other double-digit scorer with 1 points per game. Alterique Gilbert leads UConn with 4.2 assists per game this season. As a team, UConn is averaging 71 points on 41.5% shooting from the field, 33.4% from behind the arc and 71.9% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 65.8 points per game on 40.9% shooting from the field and 33% from behind the arc this season. UConn is 10-3 straight up and 7-4-2 against the spread at home this season. I had considered the points with Memphis, but the problem for me is that the Huskies need this game slightly more than Memphis does, and UConn, despite having a below average mark in conference play, is still a team that’s built for these late season surges. The Huskies have had success at home and I just think that ends up being the difference here, so I’ll lay the points with UConn at home in this one.
