The Line: UMass Minutemen +4 -- Over/Under:
The UMass Minutemen and the Southern Illinois Salukis meet in college basketball action on Thursday as part of the 2018 Las Vegas Holiday Invitational.
The UMass Minutemen come into this game with a 3-2 record following a 92-60 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff in their last outing. Curtis Cobb led the Minutemen with 17 points on 6 of 7 shooting with 4 threes while Carl Pierre came right behind with 16 points on 6 of 13 shooting with 4 triples of his own along with 5 assists. Jonathan Laurent added 12 points and Rashaan Holloway chipped in 11 points to round out the quartet of double-digit scorers for UMass in the win. Luwane Pipkins chipped in 5 points with 10 rebounds and 11 assists but still leads the Minutemen in scoring with 18.4 points along with a team-high 6.8 assists per game while Holloway leads UMass on the glass with 6.6 rebounds per game this season. As a team, UMass is scoring 82.6 points per game on 49.7% shooting from the field, 35.8% from behind the 3-point line and 68.4% from the foul line this season.
The Southern Illinois Salukis come into this one with a 2-2 mark after an 83-69 win over Howard last time out. Marcus Bartley led the Salukis with 18 points on 6 of 7 shooting with 5 threes with 5 assists while Sean Lloyd Jr. added 17 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists and Darius Beane added 12 points to round out the trio of double-digit scorers for SIU in the win. Aaron Cook added 9 points with a team-high 10 assists while Thik Bol and Kavion Pippen added 11 and 10 rebounds respectively. Cook leads Southern Illinois with an average of 13.5 points per game while Pippen leads the Salukis in rebounding with 6.8 rebounds per game and Bartley is SIU’s leading assist man with 4.2 assists per game this season. As a team, Southern Illinois is averaging 68.2 points per game on 45.1% shooting from the field, 39.7% from behind the arc and 72.7% from the foul line this season.
UMass is 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games following a game where they covered the spread and 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games after scoring 90 points in their previous game while the under is 5-1 in their last 6 neutral site games. Southern Illinois is 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games against a team with a winning record and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games against the A-10 while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 non-conference games.
This game features a pair of underrated teams that could make some noise in their respective conferences this season. With that said, as far as this game goes, Southern Illinois has a slight experience advantage but I like what the Minutemen bring to the table offensively. With this game being on a neutral floor, I’ll side with UMass and the points here.
