The San Diego State Aztecs and the Utah State Aggies meet in Mountain West college basketball action from the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum on Tuesday night.
The San Diego State Aztecs will look to stay hot after winning 5 straight and 8 of their last 9 games following a 60-59 win over UNLV last time out. Jalen McDaniels led the Aztecs with 16 points along with 5 rebounds while Matt Mitchell added 15 points and 5 rebounds and Devin Watson had 13 points with a team-high 4 assists and 3 steals to round out the trio of double-digit scorers for SDSU in the winning effort. Jordan Schakel chipped in 9 points and a team-high 6 rebounds as well in the victory. McDaniels leads San Diego State with an average of 16.9 points and 8.3 rebounds per game while Watson leads the Aztecs in assists with 4.6 assists per game this season. As a team, San Diego State is averaging 73.6 points per game on 45% shooting from the field, 36.3% from behind the arc and 73% from the foul line this season.
The Utah State Aggies will also be looking to keep their momentum going after winning 4 straight and 11 of their last 12 games following a 78-71 overtime win over Boise State in their last outing. Sam Merrill led the Aggies with 32 points on 9 of 19 shooting with 5 threes and a perfect 9 of 9 mark from the foul line with a team-high 8 rebounds while Abel Porter added 16 points with 3 threes and a 7 of 7 mark from the charity stripe. Brock Miller added 11 points and Neemias Queta chipped in 10 points with 8 rebounds of his own to round out the quartet of double-digit scorers for Utah State in the win. Merrill leads Utah State with an average of 20.2 points and 4.2 assists per game while Queta leads the Aggies in rebounding with 9 rebounds per game this season. As a team, Utah State is averaging 78.6 points per game on 47.1% shooting from the field, 35.9% from behind the 3-point line and 74.9% from the foul line this season.
San Diego State is 19-7 ATS in their last 26 conference games and 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games against a team with a winning record while the under is 5-0 in their last 5 games overall. Utah State is 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games following a win and 1-7 ATS in their last 8 games against a team with a winning record while the over is 5-2 in their last 7 home games. San Diego State is 9-1-1 ATS in the last 11 meetings between these two teams.
This has all of the potential of being the game of the night between two of the better teams in the Mountain West this season. However, while Utah State has been rolling, they’ve had to grind out some of those wins, including their overtime win over Boise State last time out. San Diego State had to battle UNLV, but the Aztecs have a defense that travels and are capable of hanging with any team in the conference and winning, just ask Nevada. I’ll take a shot with San Diego State given how much success the Aztecs have had in this matchup.
