The Line: Vanderbilt Commodores -11 -- Over/Under:
The Winthrop Eagles and Vanderbilt Commodores meet Tuesday in college basketball action at the Memorial Gymnasium.
The Winthrop Eagles finished the season red hot, as they won 12 of their final 16 games. Winthrop does lose some of its key players that helped make that run possible, but a duo of Josh Ferguson and Bjorn Broman combined for 20.4 points, 9.6 rebounds and four assists last season. Adam Pickett returns after averaging 9.3 points on 54.7 percent shooting and Nych Smith dished 2.1 assists in limited playing time. The Winthrop Eagles will certainly miss the double doubles and efficiency of Xavier Cooks, but there’s more than enough on this roster to have a successful season and make an impressive run in the Big South. The Winthrop Eagles have won five of their last eight road games.
The Vanderbilt Commodores hope for a bounce back season after winning just 12 games and really struggling in SEC play. To make matters worse for Vanderbilt, it lost its top-three scorers from last season, which means Saben Lee, who averaged 10.6 points and 3.1 assists, will be the Commodores top returning player. Joe Toye averaged 5.7 points and two rebounds while Maxwell Evans played 13 minutes per game. The Vanderbilt Commodores need to develop some sort of depth if this season is going to be a success, as they got little bench help last season and relied heavily on four players to do majority of the heavy lifting. The Vanderbilt Commodores have won five of their last seven home games.
The Eagles are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 non-conference games, 1-5 ATS in their last 6 road games and 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games overall. The Commodores are 7-19 ATS in their last 26 non-conference games, 4-12 ATS in their last 16 home games and 8-23 ATS in their last 31 games overall. The over is 4-1 in Commodores last 5 overall and the over is 7-2 in Eagles last 9 road games.
The Winthrop Eagles finished the season strong and that could have some sort of carry over to this season, even with the roster looking a little different. The Vanderbilt Commodores have a lot of production to replace and it could take time to find a productive and consistent rotation. Give me the Eagles and the points.
