Hampton Pirates (1-0) at VCU Rams (1-0)
|Date & Time||Friday November 9, 2018, 7:00 PM (EST)|
The Line: VCU Rams -12.5 -- Over/Under: 152.5
The Hampton Pirates and the VCU Rams will be matching up at Siegel Center in college basketball action on Friday.
Hampton enters this season following a 19-16 campaign last year, finishing 12-4 in MEAC play. The Pirates fell to North Carolina Central in the title game of the conference championship, then fell in the first round of the NIT to Notre Dame.
Hampton put up a big win in their first action of the season, railing MACU 110-58. Tops in scoring for the Pirates in that one was Jermaine Marrow, with 22 points, six assists and five rebounds to his credit.
Over on the VCU side, they’re coming off a 18-15 record last year, with a 9-9 mark in A-10 play for a fifth-place regular-season finish. VCU didn’t play in the postseason following an exit from the A-10 Tournament and a declined invite to the CBI.
VCU posted a win in their first action of the year as well, taking out Gardner-Webb 69-57. Leading the scoring for the Rams in that game was Isaac Vaan, who had 16 points, eight rebounds and three assists.
The Pirates are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 non-conference games and 3-7 ATS in their last 10 overall. Hampton is also 2-5 ATS in their last seven road games and 1-6 ATS in their last seven after a straight-up win.
Meanwhile, the Rams are 1-4 ATS in their last five home games and 4-9 ATS in their last 13 non-conference games. VCU is 0-5 ATS in their last five Friday games and 1-4 ATS in their last five after a straight-up win.
I always try not to base too much on the first few games of the season, but it’s hard not to notice VCU’s relatively slim victory in their opener. If there’s a bright side here, it’s that the scoring was reasonably well-balanced; there just wasn’t very much of it.
I can’t judge Hampton off one game either, but from what I’ve seen they’re capable of covering. Give me the Pirates.
