Villanova Wildcats -3.5 -- Over/Under 143.5
The 10th ranked Marquette Golden Eagles will travel to Finneran Pavilion to take on the Villanova Wildcats this Wednesday night in College Basketball action.
The 10th ranked Marquette Golden Eagles won their 4th straight game and improved to 23-4 (12-2 Big East) on the season after defeating the Providence Friars, 76-58, this past Saturday. Marquette dominated Providence on both ends of the court and had no trouble pulling away for the victory after taking a 61-39 lead with midway through the 2nd half. Marquette shot 54.9% from the field and 47.6% from beyond the arc while holding the Friars to just 38.6% shooting from the field. Leading the way for the Golden Eagles was Sam Hauser who had a double-double with 18 points, 13 rebounds, 1 assist, and 2 blocks.
On the season, Marquette is averaging 78.9 ppg on 46.8% shooting from the field. The Golden Eagles are averaging 9.4 three-pointers per game on 39.9% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Marquette has been led by Markus Howard (25.3 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 4.0 apg, 1.1 spg), Sam Hauser (15.2 ppg, 6.9 rpg, 2.3 apg), Joey Hauser (10.0 ppg, 5.4 rpg, 2.3 apg), and Sacar Anim (8.6 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 1.2 apg).
Defensively, Marquette is allowing their opponents to average 68.6 ppg on 40.4% shooting from the field. The Golden Eagles have a rebound margin of 4.9 and a turnover margin.
The Villanova Wildcats lost their 3rd consecutive game and dropped to 20-8 (11-4 Big East) on the season after being defeated by the Xavier Musketeers, 66-54, this past Sunday. Villanova led by a 30-27 margin at halftime, however, struggled offensively in the 2nd half and couldn’t fight back after a 17-0 Musketeers run gave Xavier a 58-44 lead with 6:25 left in regulation. Villanova shot just 33.9% from the field and 27.8% from beyond the arc in the loss. Leading the way for the Wildcats was Eric Paschall who had 17 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks, and 2 steals.
On the season, Villanova is averaging 74.9 ppg on 44.3% shooting from the field. The Wildcats are averaging 10.7 three-pointers per game on 35.3% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Villanova has been led by Phil Booth (18.4 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 3.8 apg), Eric Paschall (17.3 ppg, 6.1 rpg, 2.1 apg), Collin Gillespie (11.2 ppg, 2.6 rpg, 3.0 apg, 1.2 spg), and Saddiq Bey (8.4 ppg, 5.4 rpg, 1.3 spg).
Defensively, Villanova is holding their opponents to an average of 67.4 ppg on 43.8% shooting from the field. The Wildcats have a rebound margin of 2.6.
The Golden Eagles are 6-0 ATS in their last 6 road games and 13-3 ATS in their last 16 games following a straight up win. The Wildcats are 22-8 ATS in their last 30 home games and 54-25 ATS in their last 79 games following an ATS loss.
Marquette has won 12 of their last 13 games and have been solid on both ends of the court this season as the Golden Eagles rank 47th in scoring offense, 65th in FG%, and 28th in defensive FG%.
Villanova has dropped 4 of their last 5 games and currently rank 120th in scoring offense, 10th in three-pointers made per game, and 72nd in scoring defense.
Marquette has been able to take a 1.5 game lead in the Big East standings thanks to Villanova’s recent struggles, however, the Wildcats were able to give Marquette all they could handle in a 66-65 loss at Marquette in early February. Marquette has one of the best scorers in all of College Basketball in Markus Howard, who had a big game against Villanova in their first match-up, however, the Villanova defense is the strength of this year’s team and the Wildcats have been very good at home this season, posting a 11-2 record. Marquette is a solid team, however, I think this is a bad spot for them as their going to be playing a Villanova team on the road in a game that the Wildcats need to win and as I think Eric Paschall and Phil Booth will have some success on the offensive end, I’m taking Villanova to snap their losing streak and cover this small spread. Good Luck!
