The Line: Purdue -4 -- Over/Under: 137
The Purdue Boilermakers and Villanova Wildcats meet Saturday in the second round of the college basketball NCAA Tournament at the XL Center.
The Purdue Boilermakers look for another victory after cruising by Old Dominion in the first round. The Purdue Boilermakers are averaging 76.2 points on 44.6 percent shooting and allowing 66.8 points on 42.1 percent shooting. Carsen Edwards is averaging 23 points and three assists while Ryan Cline is averaging 11.9 points and 2.8 rebounds. Matt Haarms is grabbing 5.4 rebounds and Nojel Eastern is dishing 2.5 assists. The Purdue Boilermakers are shooting 36.4 percent from beyond the arc and 73.2 percent from the free throw line. The Purdue Boilermakers are allowing 34.4 percent shooting from deep and are grabbing 36.9 rebounds per game. The Purdue Boilermakers have won seven of their last 10 non-home games.
The Villanova Wildcats look for another Sweet 16 appearance after escaping a first round matchup against Saint Mary’s. The Villanova Wildcats are averaging 74.1 points on 44.1 percent shooting and allowing 66.8 points on 43.3 percent shooting. Phil Booth is averaging 18.6 points and 3.8 assists while Eric Paschall is averaging 16.5 points and 6.2 rebounds. Collin Gillespie is the third double-digit scorer and Saddiq Bey is grabbing 5.3 rebounds. The Villanova Wildcats are shooting 35.4 percent from beyond the arc and 72.5 percent from the free throw line. The Villanova Wildcats are allowing 33.6 percent shooting from deep and are grabbing 35.1 rebounds per game. The Villanova Wildcats have won five of their last 11 non-home games.
The Wildcats are 14-3 ATS in their last 17 NCAA Tournament games, 39-15 ATS in their last 54 non-conference games and 37-18 ATS in their last 55 neutral site games. The Boilermakers are 4-1-1 ATS in their last 6 Saturday games, 39-19 ATS in their last 58 non-conference games and 2-7 ATS in their last 9 vs. Big East. Th over is 38-17-1 in Boilermakers last 56 neutral site games. The over is 4-1 in Wildcats last 5 overall.
The Villanova Wildcats have the heart of a champion and won't go down easily, but this isn't the same team from past years and has limited depth that hurts them against good teams. The Purdue Boilermakers are playing some of their best and most consistent ball of the season, which includes winning their last five games by an average of 11 points while allowing just 38 percent shooting. If that defensive effort continues, Villanova is going to have a hard time hanging around in this contest. I have to side with Purdue and the reasonable line.
