The St. John’s Red Storm and the Villanova Wildcats meet in Big East conference college basketball action from Finneran Pavilion on Tuesday night.
The St. John’s Red Storm will be looking to build on their current 3-game winning streak after a 97-94 overtime win over Georgetown in their last outing. Shamorie Ponds led the Red Storm with 37 points on 11 of 21 shooting with 6 threes and a 9 of 12 mark from the foul line while adding 6 assists and 4 steals. Justin Simon came next with 14 points on 7 of 11 shooting with a team-high 9 rebounds and 6 assists while Mustapha Heron added 12 points. Marvin Clark II and LJ Figueroa each added 11 to finish off the scoring in double figures for St. John’s in the win, with Clark II shooting 4 of 10 with 3 triples while Figueroa added 9 rebounds, 5 assists and 6 steals. Ponds leads St. John’s with an average of 20.4 points and 6 assists per game while Figueroa leads the Red Storm on the glass with 6.9 rebounds per game this season. As a team, St. John’s is averaging 84.7 points per game on 48.9% shooting from the field, 40.2% from behind the arc and 70.6% from the foul line this season.
The Villanova Wildcats will look to build on their current 3-game winning streak after a 65-59 win over Providence in their last outing. Phil Booth led the Wildcats with 23 points on 7 of 16 shooting with 3 threes, 7 rebounds and a team-high 4 assists while Eric Paschall added 13 points and 14 rebounds for the double-double and Cole Swider added 10 points on a perfect 4 of 4 from the floor with a pair of threes to finish off the trio of double-digit scorers for Villanova in the win. Booth leads Villanova with an average of 17.3 points and 3.5 assists per game while Dhamir Cosby-Roundtree leads the Wildcats on the glass with 7.1 rebounds per game this season. As a team, Villanova is averaging 74.3 points per game on 44.8% shooting from the field, 34.7% from behind the arc and 73.3% from the foul line this season.
St. John’s is 4-0-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall and 5-1-1 ATS in their last 7 conference games while the over is 4-1 in their last 5 road games. Villanova is 35-16 ATS in their last 51 games overall and 19-7 ATS in their last 26 home games while the under is 8-2-1 in their last 11 games following a win. St. John’s is 5-2 ATS in the last 7 meetings between these two teams.
Villanova has been solid at home, and are an extremely dangerous team to play when the shots are falling, just ask UCONN who were run out of Madison Square Garden just before Christmas by the Wildcats after being tied at halftime. However, St. John’s has responded to criticism of their not so difficult schedule by thrashing Marquette at home and going on the road and clawing out a win against a tough Georgetown team. This is the first time that a spread between these two teams is single digits, and I think that goes to speak to how well the Red Storm have played this season. I’ll take a shot with St. John’s and the points in a game I can definitely see going down to the wire.
