The Line: Villanova Wildcats -11 -- Over/Under: 139
The Temple Owls and the Villanova Wildcats meet in a college basketball matchup from Finneran Pavilion on Wednesday night.
The Temple Owls come into this game looking to build on their 3-game winning streak which has the Owls sitting at 7-1 after a 77-70 win over Saint Joseph’s in their last outing. Quinton Rose and Shizz Alston Jr. tied for the team-high with 15 points as the lone pair of Owls to finish in double figures scoring with Rose adding 5 assists and a pair of steals while Alston Jr. chipped in 5 rebounds and a team-high 6 assists. Nate Pierre-Louis added 7 points and a team-high 13 rebounds as well in the winning effort for Temple. Alston Jr. leads Temple with an average of 17.1 points and 5.8 assists per game while Ernest Aflakpui leads the Owls on the glass with 7.5 rebounds per game this season. As a team, Temple is averaging 75.4 points per game on 44.1% shooting from the field, 29.9% from behind the arc and 71.6% from the foul line this season.
The Villanova Wildcats will be looking to add to their current 4-game winning streak which has the defending champions sitting at 6-2 on the year after an 85-78 win over La Salle in their last outing. Eric Paschall led the Wildcats with 27 points on 9 of 17 shooting with 3 threes while Phil Booth added 19 points with 3 triples of his own and Collin Gillespie added 15 points with a team-high 5 assists to round out the trio of double-digit scorers for the Wildcats in the winning effort. Booth leads Villanova in scoring with an average of 16.9 points per game while Gillespie leads the Wildcats in assists with 3 assists per game and Dhamir Cosby-Roundtree is Villanova’s top rebounder with 8.4 rebounds per game this season. As a team, Villanova is averaging 76.4 points per game on 45.5% shooting from the field, 35% from behind the arc and 72% from the foul line this season.
Temple is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 road games and 9-4 ATS in their last 13 games against a team with a winning record while the over is 6-1-1 in their last 8 games against the Big East. Villanova is 13-5 ATS in their last 18 games overall and 15-5 ATS in their last 20 home games while the under is 7-1 in their last 8 non-conference games. Temple is 0-5 ATS in the last 5 meetings between these two teams and 2-6 ATS in the last 8 meetings between these two teams at Villanova.
Even though it was on the road, I’m still a bit alarmed at how the Wildcats scraped by a winless La Salle team in their last outing. Temple hasn’t had much success against Villanova over the years, but the Owls are coming off of a pair of solid road victories and have enough experience and talent to keep this one within single digits so I’ll take a shot with Temple and the points in this game.
