NCAA BB | UMBC Retrievers (24-10) at Virginia Cavaliers (31-2)

The top ranked Virginia Cavaliers face the UMBC Retrievers  in Friday NCAA college basketball action.

The UMBC Retrievers pulled off a sizeable 65-62 victory versus the Vermont Catamounts as a ten point underdog in the America East championship. UMBC was outshot 47.4%-44.6% but came up with 18 extra looks at the basket to offset the Catamounts 21-5 advantage at the stripe.

The Retrievers relied heavily on the production of Jairus Lyles and he responded with a game high 27 points on 10-23 including 5-7 from long range. KJ Maura gave UMBC eight points on 3-7 while five players added between 5-7 points.

The Virginia Cavaliers rolled to the ACC regular season crown and the roll continued with the Cavaliers winning the conference postseason with a 71-63 decision versus North Carolina.  Virginia held a slight 42%-40.8% shooting advantage but went 20-22 from the stripe to win.

Kyle Guy topped the balanced Virginia attack with 16 points and four assists on 7-15 with Devon Hall adding 15 points and five pulls. Nigel Johnson gave the Cavaliers 12 points, six rebounds and six helpers on 4-14 while De’Andre Hunter tossed in ten points.

The Cavaliers are the best defensive squad in the game so he Retrievers will have significant trouble scoring the basketball. I think if Virginia plays their game UMBC won’t break the 60 point plateau…

Virginia -22.5

I have been a sports fan since I was old enough to pick up a ball and have always been drawn to competition. I don't participate in sporting events any longer but I do like to provide my opinion on games and writing gives me that outlet. I won't always be right but I always put 100% in to every article I do whether it's the World Series or an 0-10 college football team. Mitch shares that same passion and allows me to express myself in my own way.
